Ehlane Plains Camp

Ehlane Plains Camp

Feefo logo

With a name taken from the Zulu word for ‘wilderness’, Ehlane Plains Camp can consider itself well named. Lying in the vastness of the eastern Serengeti, this exquisitely designed tented camp has views of endless savannahs, which for part of the year are covered in the great wildebeest herds on their epic annual Migration through this part of Tanzania.

Ehlane Plains Camp leaves a light footprint on the environment. Closing only during the wettest months of April and May, this accommodation collects fresh water from springs within the park and uses solar power for lighting. The eight tents are large and spacious, grand in design yet subtle too, their lines following those of the landscape. Meals are cooked over campfires and served outside as often as possible, adding an authentic touch to this contemporary camp.

As for wildlife, the main show is between October and December when migrating wildebeest and zebra arrive to feast on the fresh grass of the Serengeti. Resident predators such as lions, cheetahs and spotted hyena are very active and there is plenty of predator-prey interaction. Such is the wealth and diversity of wildlife in this area of the Serengeti, however, that year-round game viewing of the highest quality can be enjoyed here. Morning and afternoon drives are augmented by guided walks and hot-air balloon safaris while inter-connecting tents mean that families with children can easily be accommodated at Ehlane and there are guides available for private family safaris.

Tented Suite

Ehlane Plains Camp has eight canvas suites, each with unfettered views of the Serengeti from every angle. A king-sized bed complete with bedside tables and electric lamps takes centre stage, and there is also a lounge area with comfortable couches and a coffee table as well as a dressing room with handcrafted cupboards. The bathroom is en suite and consists of a shower, double hand basins and a flush toilet.

Other Rooms

Two tents at Ehlane have been designed as ‘star domes’, drawing inspiration from the Arabian theme of sleeping on an open rooftop, surrounded by plush cushions and the starry cosmos. Two other tents are ideal for families of up to five: they feature inter-connected suites with a private lounge and cushion-covered floor.

Ehlane is an unfenced camp and offers simple but comfortable facilities. The communal dining and lounge are located in the centre of the camp and serve as the main socialising area - there is a satellite Wi-Fi connection so you share your experiences with those back home.  Step outside and you find the fire pit and snug chairs, ready for a safari story or two.

All meals and selected drinks (including local beers and South African wines) are included at Ehlane Plains Camp. Flying in fresh produce regularly and baking its own bread, cakes and pastries, the camp aims to produce healthy, balanced and tantalizing menus as well as to cater to individual dietary requirements.

The day usually revolves around an early breakfast, lunch on your return from the morning activity and then a grand dinner after drinks around the campfire. However, meals and mealtimes are flexible at Ehlane, and picnic lunches can be organised for full-day game drives while early evenings can be spent away from camp with sun-downer drinks and canapés. You can dine with fellow safari travellers at camp or choose to sit down at a table in the privacy of your own veranda.
