Hartford House

Feefo logo

Hartford House, a world-class country lodge, is in the Natal Midlands, in the heart of thoroughbred country, amidst the sun drenched valleys of Giants Castle. Situated on the same property as Summerhill Stud Farm, you can enjoy the unique experience of being right next to a world-class stud breeding ground. Hartford House is in a world of heroic battles, serene mountain passes, arts and crafts, famous schools and colleges, and trout fishing spots, as well as traditional tennis and golf courses.

You can spend your days strolling around the beautiful estate, pampering yourself with treatments at the Wellness Centre and enjoying the tranquil and peaceful setting. Hartford was home to the family of Natal's last Prime Minister, and has been noted as one of South Africa's most beautiful houses and most magnificent stud farms.

  • Set in the heart of the midlands on a beautiful estate
  • The only world-class hotel on a world-class racehorse stud in the world
  • The restaurant is among the Top 10 in South Africa
  • A grand old manor house beautifully restored
  • Spacious suites - we recommend staying in the Lakeside Suites
  • Enjoy relaxing treatments offered at the spa
  • Hartford offers a host of activities, including trout fishing, and horse-riding, of course!

  • Bird watching
  • Fishing
  • Golf
  • Historical tours
  • Horse riding
  • Live music & entertainment
  • Tennis
  • Guided walks
The Midlands setting is just so peaceful and tranquil; the horse riding and the spa treatments were my favourite moments!

Gosling Suite

Hartford House offers accommodation in 14 luxury suites in the main manor house, overlooking the garden and overlooking the trout lake; each with their own unique style, decor and design.

The bedrooms are designed for country comfort, with under-floor heating, heated towel rails and fireplaces.

Mbulelo Lake Suite

The four Lakeside Suites are positioned right on the lake, allowing great views of the trout lake from the rooms. These suites each have their own private splash pool for hot, lazy country afternoons.

Tour the world-class stud farm, do a spot of trout fishing or explore the many paths criss-crossing the 7000 acre conservancy.

Alternatively, concentrate on relaxing around the swimming pool or be pummeled by the masseurs in the wellness centre who are trained in various forms of massage from Swedish and deep tissue to Indian head massage and reflexology.

The award-winning restaurant serves breakfasts, lunches and dinners either overlooking the magnificent gardens from the veranda or in the candle-lit dining hall.

Dinners are particularly decadent 5-course affairs. Traditional Zulu dancers and singers perform on selected evenings. Master Chef Jacqueline Cameron has been said to be one of the best chefs in the region.

Hartford House

Marjorie Needham

"We thought Hartford House was beautiful and enjoyed it, good accommodation, food and service and would recommend it to anyone. The estate and gardens are also lovely and the horses."

Ian Stirling

Food in a class of its own both dinner and breakfast (where we met the owner having breakfast with his family, couldn't have been nicer and talked to us for ages also at dinner that night] Staff fabulous nothing was any trouble. We were fortunate to take part in a Meerlust wine tasting [that was wonderful) What an amazing story, Mik Goss has a first class establishment there and overseas it daily himself, there is no substitute for that and it shows.
