Katuma Bush Lodge
Although it the remotest and least-visited of all Tanzania's sprawling national parks, Katavi is also home to some of its densest populations of hippos and crocodiles, and the end of the dry season can easily see 4 000 elephants and 200 hippos jostling around waterholes for a drink.
Sited within this virtually untouched landscape of the Katisunga plains that teem with roan, sable and eland antelopes and big cats, Katuma Bush Lodge effortlessly meshes modern creature comforts with unfussy accommodation where nature is allowed to be the star of the show.
Each spacious tent is set on a raised platform and you should not be surprised to find smaller animals wandering through the camp, their curiosity having got the better of them. A dik-dik may graze on the sweet grass outside your verandah or an aerial-tailed warthog and her adorable brood may pass through on their way to find a drink. At night, capture the day's events at your private writing desk and revel in the knowledge that you are truly off the beaten track.

Guided walking safaris
‘Roughing it' has never been this comfortable. Although Katuma is set within one of the remotest parts of Tanzania, many of the perks of civilization are close to hand. The large, thatched living area is raised on a wooden deck to fully enjoy the spectacle that the plains of Katisunga offer. From there, take the walkway to the secluded swimming pool and have a refreshing plunge as lilac-breasted rollers frolic overhead. The deck outside the lounge area has an inviting open fireplace that becomes a gathering place to savour the classic orange African sunset before the Milky Way's strands of diamond stars starts twinkling in the inky night sky.
