Set in one of South Africa’s largest privately-owned game reserves, Klaserie Sands River Camp delivers the quintessential Big 5 safari experience. One of the smallest and most intimate accommodations in the greater Kruger area, Klaserie Sands River Camp has only four guest suites, each air conditioned and looking out over a seasonal river where antelope and birds can be seen. The accommodation includes a honeymoon suite as well as suites with inter-connecting rooms, making it ideal both for romantic travellers and discerning families with children. Klaserie Sands River Camp can also be booked in its entirety for a group of up to eight for a truly exclusive experience.

The camp lies in Klaserie Private Game Reserve, 60 000 hectares of wild woodlands and sun-baked savannah in South Africa. Sharing an unfenced border with the mighty Kruger National Park, the Klaserie Reserve is classic Big 5 country, home to lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo and elephant as well as some of Africa’s most endangered animals and birds such as cheetahs, wild dogs and the enormous ground hornbill. Morning and afternoon drives as well as spot-lit evening drives take you into the heart of the drama; guided nature walks are also offered, and a specialist birding guide is available on request. You can also participate in and contribute to conservation programmes, including a rhino preservation project.

Attractively located under giant forest trees, Klaserie Sands River Camp is neat and compact yet still offers its guests a fitness centre, massages on request and a rim-flow swimming pool overlooking a popular waterhole. Privately owned and managed, it offers an elevated level of service and hospitality together with excellent guiding.

Guest Suite

There is a total of four suites at Klaserie Sands River Camp, each air conditioned and equipped with overhead fans for complete comfort. There are two Standard Suites, a Honeymoon Suite and a Family Suite with interconnecting rooms, all with expansive wooden decks overlooking the river and well-frequented waterhole.

Large, attractively furnished and lying under a traditional thatched roof, the suites each have their own bathroom featuring a bathtub, basin and shower plus a separate toilet. The Honeymoon and Family suites have an additional outdoor shower for the classic ‘shower under the stars’ experience.

The camp’s reception area, dining room and fire-lit lounge are all part of the main building along with a well-stocked bar and a small library; step outside onto broad timber decking and you find sun loungers arranged around a rim-flow swimming pool. There is complimentary Wi-Fi in the main building.

Klaserie Sands River Camp has a well-equipped, air-conditioned fitness centre as well as qualified therapists available for massages and various spa treatments on request. You can choose to be pampered in the privacy of your suite or on your private deck.

The day begins with an early morning wake-up call and a light breakfast of tea and fresh coffee with fruit and rusks – a traditional baked biscuit – before you venture out on your dawn game drive. You return to camp at mid-morning for a hearty cooked brunch – although you may also find that you will be sitting down for your bacon and eggs in a wilderness setting away from camp to enjoy a classic ‘bush breakfast’, depending on the weather, sightings and your schedule.

A mid-afternoon cup of tea or coffee and a slice of home-baked cake provide the sustenance before your afternoon game drive, at the end of which you enjoy iced drinks and snacks as the sun sets over Klaserie. Back at camp you have a 3-course dinner to look forward to, served with good South African wines and usually enjoyed in the ‘boma’ – a traditional outdoor eating area.
