Kungwe Beach Lodge offers authentic tented accommodation for just 21 guests on the soft-sand western shore of Lake Tanganyika. The surrounding Mahale Mountain forests are home to about a thousand chimpanzees and researchers in the park have spent more than half a century habituating one troop – called the ‘M group’’ – to humans. This extraordinary Tanzanian lodge puts you in close contact with this unique group of chimps for a rugged lake-forest safari combination.

When you are not tracking these intelligent, sensitive creatures, indulge in myriad water sports that vast Lake Tanganyika has to offer, including snorkelling its azure depths (it is the second-deepest lake in the world), kayaking and incredible fresh-water angling.

As the setting sun – having just painted the lake a rich apricot hue – slips behind the green Mahale Mountains and a fish eagle unmistakably cries out, sit down next to the crackling shore-side fire and enjoy a delicious barbeque under a silver-sequined night sky.

Beach Tent Double

Airy and spacious, the colonial-style walk-in tents are dotted along the soft-sand shore and each has its own verandah, affording dramatic views of Lake Tanganyika. Built on raised wooden decks, the comfortable structures have hardwood floors, a thatched roof and are well-spaced along the beach offering guests additional privacy. Four-poster beds are draped with frothy mosquito netting and bathrooms are en suite with walk-in hot showers and flush loos.

A thatched mess tent built in the shape of a dhow boat forms the communal lounge and dining area where sumptuous lodge meals are served. Locally-crafted furniture contrasts with modern upholstered pieces for an eclectic feel. The cosy lounge offers a selection of books and board games for wiling away lazy afternoons. A private jetty stretches out from the shore 20 metres into the still water, providing a place to take in panoramic views of the lake, the jungle-draped mountains and the Mahale forest. Along the park’s forest trails find not only chimps but other primates like red colobus monkeys and baboons as well as antelope, warthog and an impressive variety of bird species. Water-based activities on Lake Tanganyika such as boat safaris, kayaking, snorkeling and some of Tanzania’s best fresh-water fishing are also available at Kungwe Beach Lodge

Meals are enjoyed in the mess tent, which is raised off the ground with thatched roof and is built in the iconic shape of an East African dhow. The lake, mountains and lush forest terrain are the backdrop as you enjoy dishes that are simple yet tasty and locally inspired with some international influences. Candlelit barbeque dinners are occasionally served on the unspoilt shore under the African stars.
