Makalali Private Game Lodge is a modern bush retreat with distinctive architecture, set in the heart of the Makalali Resource Reserve, about five hours from Johannesburg. The lodge's central area is beautifully designed, blending rustic elements with contemporary style to create a seamless connection between indoors and the surrounding nature.

Savour a variety of African-inspired dishes in the main dining area, warmed by a dual-aspect fireplace that links the bar lounge to the dining space—perfect for cozy, intimate dinners. Outside, the expansive deck is built around indigenous trees, offering views of a nearby watering hole where wildlife often gathers.

Makalali offers a wide range of activities, including morning, afternoon, and night game drives, birdwatching, and walking safaris. Adventurous guests can also try excursions like caving, abseiling, and hot-air ballooning, bookable as extra activities or day trips. The lodge is family-friendly, with childcare services and customised wildlife experiences for young explorers, making it an ideal safari destination for families.

Superior Room

The Superior Rooms at Makalali Main Lodge offer a blend of comfort and style, with air-conditioning, sleek leather and wood furnishings, and luxurious en-suite bathrooms that include both indoor and outdoor showers. Each room opens to a private patio where you can relax and and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea in the morning.

General Facilities

Makalali Private Game Lodge has a swimming pool, enclosed dining, bar and lounge area, an expansive outdoor dining deck plus an open-air boma.

The camp offers a laundry service, childcare service during meals and game drives, massages from an in-house therapist and even an art gallery.

Guests can also enjoy traditional dancing and drumming. A wide range of game viewing activities are offered at Makalali as well as a private vehicle and guide by prior arrangement. Day trips to the nearby Kruger National Park can also be arranged.

Children aged 6 to 12 can take part in a mini-rangers programme hosted by qualified rangers who will impart a new appreciation of the bush to the young ones, and they will get to take home a certificate as a reminder of their safari experience.
