I love the spacious chalets, also perfect for families with the upstairs bed for the kids. The couch and hammock in front of the chalet were perfect for pure relaxation while enjoying the amazing sea views.

Double Suite - Gold

Each of Matemwe Lodge's 12 chalets has a private balcony with hammock and sofa where you can rest and take in the stunning views of the shimmering Indian Ocean. The chalets have been built using local materials and are surrounded by lush garden. There are six triple-bed chalets available, two of which feature a private plunge pool. The spacious bathrooms include a big bathtub and walk-in shower, and mosquito nets are draped over all beds.

At Matemwe Lodge, you may want to do nothing except soak up the sun beside the pool or in your hammock with a cocktail from the bar.

If you are feeling active, however, then there is a wide selection of day activities to choose from: discover the Mnemba Atoll with its famous reef and fascinating underwater world on diving and snorkelling excursions (there is an on-site diving centre) or use the complimentary kayaks and explore the turquoise waters under your own steam.

There is Internet access at Matemwe and guests can also visit a local village and learn about Zanzibari culture, pamper themselves with massages and spa treatments or set off for a day trip around Zanzibar - all of which are easily arranged by Matemwe's staff.

Matemwe's restaurant is designed to maximise the view of the ocean and the dhow fishermen who head out at breakfast, and then return at lunch. There is also a cosy lounge area and dinner is sometimes served around the pool under the palms.

Fresh fish is combined with fresh local produce to create a tasty dining experience. Lunch is a selection of buffet-style African and European dishes while dinner includes meat, fish and vegeterian options. Before dinner, enjoy a delicious cocktail at the poolside bar.

Matemwe Lodge

Lauren Doab

"The service we received at Matemwe was the best we've ever experienced. We were made to feel so special."

Gerald Hauska

We liked Matemwe because of its situation and the village life of the fishermen nearby as well although it is no perfect situation for swimming because of the tide and the reef and some pollution of the beach . The sand is like white powder and extr aordinary and the water is clear. We did not go further by boat as we get easily seasick recently. Zanzibar Stone Town is a interesting multicultural place and we liked both tours. All accommodations met our expectations and the staff was very friendly everywhere.
