Oude Werf’s history can be traced back to 1802, when it was built on the remains of Stellenbosch’s first church, which had been constructed in 1687. And although the region’s heritage runs through all that Oude Werf does, the hotel is certainly not stuck in the past. Each of the 58 rooms has modern finishes and contemporary furnishings while its eco-consciousness is definitely part of the 21st century.
Rumoured to harbour the odd (friendly) ghost, the suites at Oude Werf overlook the poolside gardens or vine-covered courtyard. Stellenbosch is known for its Mediterranean climate – meaning hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters – but guests here will be comfortable no matter what the weather.
Its convenient and central position on one of this quaint university town’s main streets allows you to stroll under its famous oaks but also allows you easy access to drive to the surrounding wine estates. This is South Africa’s premium wine country and wine lovers will be spoilt for choice when choosing from the country’s many prestigious vintages.
