Overview of Shompole Wilderness

Kenya, Great Rift Valley

Poised along the banks of the Ewaso Ng'iro River, Shompole Wilderness Camp offers front‑row seats to the South Rift of Kenya's Great Rift Valley, renowned as the largest valley in the world. The region boasts one of Africa's richest concentrations of wildlife — from large mammals including elephants, wildebeest, and hippos to apex predators such as lions, leopards, and cheetahs.

Along the riverbanks, birds flourish with over 400 recorded species in the region, including kingfishers, hornbills and raptors. This extraordinary diversity marks the South Rift as a sanctuary for large mammals and a kaleidoscopic array of birdlife. As one of Kenya's more remote wilderness destinations, you're unlikely to see other vehicles or encounter foot traffic while out on game drives and walking safaris. Guests can also enjoy quiet animal viewings at the photography hide, perfectly positioned in front of a popular watering hole.

Shompole is also a great first choice for families looking to introduce kids to their first safari. On short, guided bush walks children will get to convene with nature, looking at flowers and trees and learning about bird calls and examining animal tracks. Fun for the whole family includes tubing down the river together feeling the fresh cold water on your skin and hearing the giddiness of adventure.
