Overview

The River Club is a refined Edwardian-style lodge situated on the Zambian banks of the Zambezi River upstream from thundering Victoria Falls. A converted farmhouse, The River Club is set in beautifully manicured gardens that run down to the river’s edge. Sit a while and see if you can spot elephants, hippos and other animals in the Zambezi National Park which is just across the river. You should keep your binoculars close at hand: the birdlife is spectacular and the region is one of Southern Africa's birding hotspots.

Watch an African sunset over the Zambezi River from The River Club's main verandah or enjoy a sundowner river cruise. Daily tours of Victoria Falls are offered as are game drives in the small but rewarding Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park, cultural village visits and fishing trips. Alternatively, simply laze by the infinity pool, enjoy the view and don't lift a finger...

The River Lodge was a GREAT way to begin our trip. Peter, Jenny, and the staff could not have been more hospitable. The one recommendation you MUST make to all the folks you book there is to GO SEE THE RHINOS! Peter has some deal with the local co nservatory in Zambia so they will take you on a walking safari where you are literally 4 yards from the white rhinos. Joe and I heard about it from another couple that was staying there. We’re so happy we did it, because the Rhinos we saw in Mombo were running off the whole time, so it was hard to get a good look, but these Zambian rhinos were just hanging out like cattle. It was lovely just standing and watching the mom and her baby.

Starting with the River Club. This is the first place I have ever been that I want to return to, even if it meant not seeing some new place in the world. I loved the accommodations - we stayed in the Rhodes Room - It looked out over the Zambezi River and the sounds of the hippos "laughing" us to sleep was delightful. The managers / hosts during our stay, Carol and Paul were very engaging and informative - we really enjoyed the tradition of having them join us for dinner. They were pleased to help us out in any way when it came to visiting Victoria Falls, arranging a driver when we elected to go see the falls from Zimbabwe and a trip to a local village we wanted to see. The evening river cruises were a spectacular way to enjoy the sunset and bird watching. The evening dinners, especially the soups were delicious and were beyond our expectations! Our driver Muta was a most pleasant young man and deserves an extra "shout out" too.
