Overview of Ubuntu Migration Camp

Tanzania, Serengeti

This authentic semi-permanent safari camp is positioned to intercept the natural flow of animals through Tanzania's Serengeti ecosystem during the annual Great Migration to ensure optimal viewing of one of nature's greatest spectacles. Ubuntu Camp is a traditional, intimate camp that offers a simple set-up with a raw wilderness feel, which delicately balances safari authenticity with guest comfort.

From June to October, Ubuntu Camp is located in the north of the Serengeti to catch the wildebeest as they cross the surging Mara River. It then moves to the southern Serengeti from November until March, where the herds gather to rest, graze and calve. With only ten tents that have safari classics like fire-heated bucket showers and gumboots for when the rains turn the earth to fertile mud, the focus at Ubuntu Camp is getting the most authentic experience of the Great Migration possible.

Make a Positive Impact Through Travel

Asilia empowers crucial wilderness areas in East Africa, benefitting people and nature alike. By making bold, and often pioneering, investments into areas that are ecologically and economically vulnerable, Asilia aims to turn these areas into viable conservation economies, benefitting both the local communities as well as the environment. With the help of guests, who contribute a levy of US$ 10 for each night that they stay at an Asilia property, Asilia is able to make a significant positive impact towards their goal of empowering these areas, including the communities and wildlife that call them home.

Family Tent

For families travelling with younger children and wanting to stay close, Ubuntu offers a Family Tent with two bedrooms joined by a shared lounge area and ground-level verandah. The main bedroom features a king-sized bed, while the children’s room is equipped with twin beds. Both rooms include en-suite facilities with classic bucket showers and flushing toilets, providing comfort and convenience in the heart of the wilderness.

General Facilities

The communal area consists of two separate canvas tents that welcome the afternoon breeze and overlook the plains. The ‘living room tent' is canvas-floored and equipped with campaign chairs, sofas and beanbags as well as coffee table books and board games. Creamy fabrics and sisal mats lend a natural feel to the space.

Guests are provided with ‘walkie-talkies' (2-way radio), allowing them to contact staff for an escort during the night (you are prohibited from walking around on your own after dark as the camp is unfenced and predators may be nearby) or room service.

Dining

Meals take place in the ‘dining room tent' and are sociable affairs with the other guests and sometimes the guides too. There is a small bar as well as a tea-and-coffee station here. In the evenings both communal tents are lit only by lanterns, creating a magical and romantic ambiance.

A continental breakfast of fresh fruit and cereal is followed by a cooked English-style breakfast. Lunch is light and refreshing – deli meats, salads and freshly-baked breads – but you might choose to take a packed picnic lunch with you on safari. Dinner is a 3-course indulgence with a touch of African flair, like BBQ kebabs made on the campfire served with robust wines.

I love Ubuntu for the simple fact that you can experience an authentic Tented Camp, and wake up to the smells of hot chocolate, tea or coffee as you are roused from the sounds of the bush by your guides and the camp staff. Explore the Southern or Northern Serengeti for iconic scenes of open plains, panoramic views and of course thousands of Wildebeest if you are lucky in between the Big 5 and large antelope herds.

We loved Ubuntu. Everything was great. It was a good mix of lux and camping. The staff were fantastic. Our guide (Michael) was fantastic. We saw a ton. The food was simple but very good. We really liked the communal dinners so we got to meet a lot of people. The lounge area was really nice. If I had to pick this may be my favourite part of the entire trip!

The team at the Ubuntu Migration Camp in short order were like old friends and exceptional. We were curious about their culture and personal stories. They were equally inquisitive about our world. All of our transport drivers and guides were awesome. We clicked with all of them.

We had a great time. Ubuntu was perfect. We just missed the mass migration but nevertheless saw many animals including lions, cheetahs, leopard, serval, rhino with child, elephants etc. and marvelous landscapes.
All accommodations met our expectations and the staff was very friendly everywhere. Regarding the location and the food Ubuntu was excellent.

Ubuntu – This small camp was very special to us! Sleeping in a tent, listening to animal noises outside the tent at night was fun! Even using the bucket shower was just part of the camping experience! The view of the Serengeti from every tent is absolutely gorgeous ! We saw so many beautiful sunrises and sunsets from our tent! The kitchen staff made wonderful three course meals, which is a real accomplishment so far out in the bush. Our one full safari day out was packed with animal sightings- lions, cheetahs, rhinos, elephants, and the wildebeest migration ! Seeing the wildebeests circling on top of the cliff and then going back later to see them running down the cliff into the Mara River was totally amazing! Since it wasn’t the first crossing the crocs weren’t hungry (whew). This is a down to earth wonderful camp- friendly staff and very knowledgeable and educated guides! A real gem of a camp!
