Overview of Ubuyu, A Banyan Tree Escape

Tanzania, Ruaha

Set along the Great Ruaha River in Ruaha National Park, Ubuyu, a Banyan Tree Escape is an intimate safari retreat with six villas surrounded by the wilderness of southern Tanzania. Its small scale and dedicated guiding offer a more private way to experience one of Tanzania’s largest national parks.

Game drives by day and night reveal Ruaha’s large elephant herds and predators, while guided walking safaris bring guests closer to the smaller details of the landscape. Specialist photographic safaris, conservation visits and cultural experiences with the Wahehe community offer other ways to explore beyond the usual game drive.

Ubuyu is well suited to couples, families and groups travelling together, with a two-bedroom villa and three-suite private retreat offering more space. Children under 14 are not permitted, while three to four nights is recommended to experience the area. June to October is the dry season, when wildlife gathers near the river, while the green season brings lush scenery and excellent birding

River Front Villa

Tucked away in a secluded grove beside the Great Ruaha River, the River Front Villas have direct views of the water and expansive decks for enjoying the setting. Private plunge pools provide a place to cool off between safari activities, while the open design keeps the river and surrounding landscape close.

Other Room Types:

Set in a shaded glade, the River Glade Villa offers a more secluded position with views towards the river. A private plunge pool and expansive deck provide additional outdoor space, while the king-size bedroom accommodates two adults.

The Two Bedroom River View Villa provides additional space for families or friends travelling together, with two bedrooms and shared living areas. King and twin beds accommodate up to four adults, while the private plunge pool and deck extend the living space outdoors.

The Ubuyu Private Retreat has three independent suites and shared living areas for groups travelling together. A 360-degree rooftop terrace and firepit lounge provide additional places to gather, while a show kitchen and private chef option add flexibility for meals.

 

General Facilities

The main living spaces look towards the Great Ruaha River, with the infinity pool providing a place to cool off and take in the surrounding bush. The open-air Living Room offers a comfortable spot to relax during the day, while the firepit provides a space to gather in the evening.

For quieter moments, Maji Spa offers treatments using local botanicals and traditional techniques. Meditation, stretching and guided forest bathing provide further opportunities to slow the pace and enjoy time at camp

Dining at Ubuyu centres around the Open Kitchen, where chefs prepare dishes using local ingredients and traditional recipes. Guests can watch the chefs at work, with plant-based dishes and responsibly sourced meat forming part of the offering.

Bush breakfasts, gourmet picnics and dinners beneath the stars provide different settings for meals, while sundowners and fireside dining add to the experience
