Overview

Set on the rugged De Kelders Cliffs, Whalesong Lodge offers sweeping views of the pristine Walker Bay on the Whale Coast.  Nestled in this fertile region with its many farms, orchards and vineyards, the lodge exudes this area’s quintessential casual charm. The purpose-built guest house is designed with comfort in mind and guests will feel right at home from the moment they arrive.

Less than a two-hour drive away from Cape Town and with Gaansbaai and its world-famous great white sharks just a short way away, Whalesong is the perfect weekend getaway for those looking to escape the city. As the name suggests, the lodge is ideally located for observing the migratory southern right whales that make the journey from the icy Antarctic to the warmer waters of the Cape between July and November every year to display, mate and breed.

A Whale Coast holiday offers beautiful coastal drives and mountain hikes and tranquil sandy bays for tranquil walks. The nearby Hemel en Aarde Valley is a noteworthy wine region producing excellent cool-climate wines that are not to be missed. And Whalesong Lodge is the perfect spot to take advantage of every feature of this diverse area.

Rooms

Standard Room

All standard rooms at Whalesong Lodge have a sea view and a small private balcony where you can enjoy the fresh sea air. The open-air en suite rooms feature a changing area with plenty of space to store your luggage and clothing. Take a dip in the bath or rinse off in the shower after a relaxing day of exploring the Gaansbaai coast then settle into an armchair with a good book, a cup of rooibos tea and a rusk with the ocean as the backdrop to your on-page adventure.

Facilities

Purpose-built to make the most of the spectacular views of Walker Bay towards Hermanus and Cape Point. The open-plan lounge and dining area spill out onto a wooden deck where you can enjoy your morning coffee or a chilled beverage while watching the southern right whales frolic in the bay (June to December). The plunge pool here is perfect for refreshing dips during the hot African summer. In the cooler months, the fireplace is the ideal spot to cuddle up with a glass of one of South Africa’s finest red wines, looking out onto the everchanging seascape. For a little bit of added relaxation, book a revitalising in-room massage or Reflexology session.

Dining

Nestled in the heart of Walker Bay, burgeoning foodie destination, there’s little surprise that Whalesong Lodge offers a delectable assortment of food and wine. The lodge uses locally sourced ingredients with an emphasis on sustainability to create its fare. Breakfast is a buffet affair, with fresh fruits, pastries, cheeses, preserves and traditional South African accompaniments like rooibos-poached fruit. Whalesong is located a short distance from a variety of laid-back seaside restaurants; the lodge is happy to make recommendations and reservations for guests. For evenings that you don’t feel like venturing out, try the mix-and-match platters with a selection of cheeses, artisanal cold meats, preserves, fresh vegetables and bread.
