Originally built in the 1920s, White Elephant Safari Lodge captures the history and romance of the golden era of safaris. Set in Pongola Game Reserve – the second oldest game reserve in the world - in kwazulu-Natal, its sweeping views and tranquil setting provide the venue for a unique African experience.
Wildlife species found in the reserve include elephant, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, black rhino and leopard, while the number of recorded species of birdlife exceeds 350. Because of its position near beautiful Lake Jozini, you are able to undertake morning and afternoon game drives as well as boat cruises, which are a great for spotting birds and enjoying the sunset.
As part of White Elephant's commitment to conservation, they have a professional researcher who monitors the area's elephant population. You will be able to accompany the researcher on a specialist visit the Research Centre to examine pachyderm bones and skulls, hear about the relocation of elephants to the Kruger National Park, and learn how the study helps vets who perform vasectomies on the older male elephants to help manage population growth.
In addition to focusing on elephant conservation, over-16s are also able to track black rhinos on foot under the ever-watchful eye of a professional guide. You will learn about rhino's fascinating social behaviour, the critical role that dung middens play in reproduction and their feeding and other habits. Those who want a more physically strenuous activity can head off in a canoe on Jozini's calm waters, looking out for animals coming to the shore to drink.
White Elephant also offers traditional guided bush walks geared towards your fitness levels and the season, and you can gain insight into local Zulu customs by visiting the Dumazulu Cultural Village. This lodge is ideal for active couples who want the unusual combination of bush and water activities.
