Overview

The Okavango Delta in Botswana is a natural wonderland where delicate dragonflies dart from green reed to pastel-pink lily, and tsessebe, sitatunga and red lechwe antelope move from island to island, watched closely by lions, leopards and crocodiles. In the midst of this untouched splendour lies Xudum Okavango Delta Lodge in the Moremi Game Reserve, whose nine luxurious suites overlook the ephemeral game-rich floodplain  and offer you the ultimate in comfort and privacy.

Guarded by a resident family of waddling hippos, the earthy glamour of Xudum (pronounced ‘Ku-doom’) compliments the electric Delta environment, where predators like African wild dogs share the floodplains with large herds of elephant and buffalo. You are able to explore the glistening waterways by mekoro (dugout canoes that are poled by your guide, depending on seasonal water levels) or traverse the golden grasslands in search of the Big 5 via 4x4. Ideal for discerning families, Xudum Okavango Delta Lodge can tailor a safari for families with children.

One of the highlights at Xudum is the rooftop lookouts built atop each suite. By day, they offer sweeping views of the lagoon and beyond, while by night they are make for adventurous place for stargazing the Milky Way.

Rooms

Suite

Built from wood and designed to be split-level, the contemporary comfort of these opulent suites rises as high as the treetops. Each has a bedroom and lounge area as well as a lower deck with a private plunge pool that overlooks the Delta. The interior design features recycled everyday objects with chunky timber, and tones of chocolate and ebony. The prime feature is a rooftop lookout that is perfect for whiling away the afternoon watching animals or enjoying a private dinner under the stars.

With 30 metres separating each suite, you are guaranteed privacy to enjoy the outdoor shower and large bath tub that offers a picture-perfect view through the floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows. All rooms also have electric fans and air conditioning that is powered by a generator.

The bed is king-sized and is enclosed in the evenings to ensure the cool air from the air conditioner is retained for a comfortable night's sleep.

Facilities

The lodge’s central lounge and dining areas are spaced over multi-layered decks and allow you to gaze out over the busy floodplain while sitting comfortably on chic, modern furniture. The outdoor dining area offers sweeping views of the plains and is an incredibly romantic space in which to savour the chef’s top-notch creations. Plump sofas, traditional basketware and tasteful objet create an ambiance of sophisticated calm and serenity. Decor runs the gamut of minimalistic charcoals, tones of white and hints of recycled metal.

Activities are centred on the surrounding seasonal waterways of the Delta and include mekoro trips and motorised boat excursions as well as traditional 4x4 game drives and guided nature walks on the plains (with prior arrangement).

Children of all ages are welcome at Xudum Okavango Delta Lodge but some activities are restricted to those older than 12 or 16 years. The lodge runs a children’s programme with specially tailored activities relating to the natural environment and also offers a babysitting service.

In-suite massages and beauty treatments can be organised with the in-house spa therapist. The lodge also offers a laundry service, Wi-Fi in common areas, a safari shop, ‘gym in a bag’ and a butler service.

Power is supplied by a generator. Horseback safaris for experienced riders can be arranged with advance notice. You can also undertake a cultural experience with the San Bushman, who have made the Kalahari and surrounding areas their home for millennia.

The airstrip, shared with sister-camp Xaranna, is about a scenic 90-minute drive from camp.

Dining

With panoramic views enjoyed from the lodge’s various lamp-lit dining areas, mealtimes are always an occasion. For breakfast, continental options include fruit, cheese and pastries are followed by how-you-like-them eggs and other English-style options.

With an only-the-best approach to food, lunch and dinner dishes combine African-style cuisine with European accents and are beautifully presented. This delicious amalgamation of tastes can be enjoyed inside, alfresco, communally or in the privacy of your own suite.

The open-plan and interactive kitchen encourages you to engage with the chefs and become involved in the cooking process.

The trackers at Xudum were really good. Accommodation food and service all up to scratch. The safari at Xudum exceeded all expectations because of this sighting: We were having the obligatory drinks in the evening as the sun went down by a water pool. The table was set up, rug on the grounds, chairs for us and all the rest you know. Across the other side of the pool were three lionesses lounging around. We kept enjoying our drinks and snacks. They started to come some distance round the pool and got ever increasingly close. We all jumped back in the Land Rover as they approached. The guys had set up some paraffin lamps around the rug on the ground but not lit them yet. There were about six. The lions came up to the lamps, about five metres from us at most. The first lion played around with one lamp for a while then lifted it by the handle and went off with it! The second lion did the same a minute or two later and followed the first to a grassy spot nearby where they continued playing with them. The third lion, yes believe it or not, did the same but kept it to herself. We were all absolutely amazed. The lions played for quite a while till it was dark actually while we waited and then they went off to find some food. The guys rescued the slightly mangled lamps when it was safe to do so. My husband got a few shots but as it was so dark by then he will have to lighten them at home. Staggering it was. All good fun. Great safari.

"The service so personal – treated like royalty, welcomed like long-lost friends. Our room, out of this world, and our ranger - TH - was so knowledgeable. So many surprises organised for us – truly amazing."

I first wanted to let you know that our trip to Africa was the best experience of our lives. I didn't want to go home. Your planning was perfect and nothing went wrong. The people of Botswana were lovely and gracious. Our accomodations were great. We met some lovely people. The guides were outstanding. Food amazing. Surroundings beautiful. The animals in our first camp were phemononal.... lions leopards cheetahs etc. The delta was beautiful however my only criticism would be that people want to see animals and in the second two camps they were scarce. The third camp had a fire 3 weeks ago and 60 percent of there concession was burnt. I thought you should know that because it was a little disappointing however when we were on the water we went fishing - saw beautiful birds & animals etc.

The Xudum stay was clearly the most luxurious accommodation and again the service, food and facilities were tops. The guides were first class and went to considerable trouble to find animals and to provide all our needs and requests. Indeed, I found that all staff in the lodge was extremely friendly and helpful and made us feel 'at home'. I did like the complete upfront payment covering all food, alcohol and clothes washing, it really made us feel cared for.

The facilities at Xudum are amazing - it beats a luxury tent any day, and the elephants woke us up right at our window one night on their way to feed. The staff and manager, Mark, were superb. It was the most rustic of all the lodges (turning off the generators at 23:30 nightly), but we really felt like we were "way out there." The food everywhere was great! I especially enjoyed trying African game, like impala and kudu.
