Overview of Zambezi Grande

Zambia, Lower Zambezi

Zambezi Grande is a luxurious retreat that sits in a prime position on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River, minutes away from Lower Zambezi National Park. Although this sophisticated lodge gives new meaning to bush luxury, the actual magic of Zambezi Grand is provided by its staff, their stories and their passion for what they do. It is not uncommon to feel like royalty when you are a guest here.

The lodge's superb location makes it a fantastic vantage point for watching animals basking in the sunshine along the river. The Zambezi delivers some serious game viewing: huge numbers of hippo and crocodile are present; large herds of elephant and buffalo are often seen at the water's edge; and the thick riverine forests are favourite hiding places for leopards. You might even spot a pride of lions quietly watching you drift by on your river boat safari or tiger-fishing excursion. Keep your binoculars trained for fish eagles, carmine bee-eaters and lilac-breasted rollers.

Expert guides will take you on twice-daily game drives in the Lower Zambezi National Park to track predators, including rare wild dogs. The park's open grasslands render good hunting for lion and the area's birdlife is nothing short of phenomenal.

My experience of the Zambezi Grande was almost perfect. The moment we arrived and were welcomed by the staff's singing and beating of the drums, I could feel the Zambian hospitality. The lodge is right on the edge of the Zambezi River and the view stretches for miles – you can hear the hippos frolicking in the river below. The lodge allows you to take in some much-needed R&R with lounges all over. The river cruises were my favourite as they allowed me to relax and soak up the sun while enjoying the spectacular views around me, a G&T in hand.
