Zipline Adventure in Cape Town - A photo blog

Summer in Cape Town is all about beautiful views, good food, sunshine and enjoying the great outdoors. For the more adventurous traveller, there is a host of exciting options and the lastest of these is the SA Forest Adventures Zipline at Silvermist Estate in Constantia Valley.

Although the tour is centrally located and conventiently on the hop-on-hop-off tourist bus route, you will feel like you are escaping into a mountain wilderness as you explore the Constantia mountains. If you are on vacation in Cape Town and looking for a thrilling experience in a beautiful setting, this one is for you.

Before you go anywhere, the SA Forest Adventure guides will make sure that you are properly kitted out in a full body harness, a safety line, a suprisingly comfortable helmet and a pair of gloves.

Once you are all kitted up, hop into the 4x4 for a ride up the mountain to the beginning of the zipline course.

Thank goodness for a vehicle - it would have taken all day to walk up this mountain! Be sure to check out the view opening up below as the vehicle climbs higher.

Once at the top of the course, your guides will brief you about your gear, the safety procedures, the hand signals, and most importantly, how to brake.

The guide who took us, Vela, is a Hout Bay local who has not only taken visitors through the course countless times, he was also involved in building the whole course. We love it when great tourism products create great opportunities for local job development and empowerment.

According to Vela, the more streamlined you can get, the faster you can go... but don't go so fast that you miss the breath taking views!

At some points you will be flying 155m (about 509ft) above the treeline for more than 500m (1 640ft) - a thrilling ride! But don't be anxious about arriving at the other side at high speed, between your own braking and your guide 'catching' you, you'll be quite safe!

There are seven zip lines in total and the whole experience takes about two hours, but with all that adrenalin, the time just flies by. And if all the fresh air and exhilaration make you a little hungry and thirsty, we highly recommend lunch and wine tasting at one of the nearby legendary Constantia winefarms.

If this whets your appetite for more adventure, Cape Town has plenty to offer - climb up Table Mountain or bomb down it on a mountain bike, paraglide off Lion's Head, kite surf on Langebaan's turquoise lagoon, or our absolute favourite - snorkel with playful Cape fur seal seals off the coast at the charming fishing village of Hout Bay.  Watch the video below for a quick tour of Cape Town's adventurous side...
