Expanding Access to Education in Rural Zambia

About Maunga Primary School

Maunga is a small rural village on the outskirts of Livingstone, Zambia. Remote and largely disconnected, with no electricity, running water, or mobile phone signal, the community faces daily challenges. Despite this, Maunga Primary School stands as a vital learning space for local children, many of whom walk long distances to attend. 

Cette initiative communautaire, menée en partenariat avec l'African Bush Camps Foundation, transforme l'école primaire de Maunga, dans la région rurale de Livingstone, en un centre d'enseignement doté de toutes les ressources nécessaires pour les élèves de la première à la huitième année.

The school provides a foundation for education in the area, but significant hurdles remain:

• Classrooms were previously in poor condition and unfit for use.
• There were no ablution facilities near the school, but these have since been added.
• Desks, chairs, and teaching materials were in short supply; while this remains an ongoing need, we have already supplied significant resources to the ECD phase.
• Teacher numbers were limited due to the absence of staff accommodation, from only 3 teachers before, there are now around 12 thanks to the addition of housing.
• Many learners arrived hungry or missed school altogether, but the introduction of healthy meals twice a day has increased both attendance and pass rates.
• Teenage pregnancies, child marriages, and economic pressures continue to contribute to high dropout rates.
• At home, there is little academic support, as most parents have not had access to formal education themselves.

Partenariat entre Go2Africa et l'école primaire de Maunga

Go2Africa is committed to supporting meaningful, community-led education initiatives. In partnership with the African Bush Camps Foundation (ABC Foundation). Through this initiative, we help strengthen the ongoing efforts of Maunga Primary School and its dedicated educators by funding practical, high-impact developments on-site.

Projects made possible through this partnership include:

• Renovating classrooms to create safer, more effective learning spaces.
• Expanding teacher housing to attract and retain qualified staff.
• Supporting school gardens to improve food security and learning opportunities.
• Implementing a two-meal daily feeding scheme to boost attendance and academic performance.
• Funding the construction of a new science lab and addressing other critical infrastructure needs.
