  • Big 5 game sightings and seasonal Wildebeest Migration viewing
  • Morning and afternoon game drives against Tanzania's dramatic scenery
  • Guided drive-and-fly logistics for great value and comfort
  • Secluded Zanzibar beach retreat with diving, snorkelling and an ocean-side spa

Opening with views of Mount Kilimanjaro and ending on the powdery sandy beaches of Zanzibar, this 10-day tour has been designed to deliver experience and value. Your safari begins at Arusha in Tanzania, the long-serving logistics hub for the region and a night at a tranquil riverside lodge. Then, you sit back in the care of a professional driver/guide and let the Rift Valley landscape open up.

There are no more than five passengers in the sturdy 4X4 vehicle, thus guaranteeing everyone a window seat. And there is plenty to see on the way as you drive to the Ngorongoro Crater – a renowned Big 5 haven – and explore the surrounding conservation area where red-robed Maasai herdsmen watch their cattle against a background of wildlife. A short charter flight then whisks you to the Serengeti where you can look forward to exceptional game viewing. Your camp is a mobile one, moving across the savannah with the migrating wildebeest and zebra herds, enabling it to set up where the action is, whether it is the birthing season, the crocodile-filled river crossings or the high-tempo rutting season.

After a week of wildlife, it is time to fly to Zanzibar and check in at Matemwe Lodge on the island’s highly prized north-east coast. Here you can be as active or as relaxed as you like; the resort specialises in both energetic and tranquil activities – from scuba diving and snorkelling to pampering massages and beauty treatments. It is the perfect ending to a safari, and makes this a great choice for couples and honeymooners.

Day 1: Arrive in Arusha

Arusha, Tanzania
Detailed breakdown

Day 1: Arrive in Arusha | 1 Night

Up arrow
Arusha, Tanzania

You are met by a tour representative at Arusha’s Kilimanjaro International Airport before being transferred the short distance – about an hour’s drive - to Rivertrees Country Inn. Set on the foothills of Mount Meru and with views of distant Mount Kilimanjaro, it is the ideal place to start your safari. Lying on the banks of the Usa River and on the edge of Arusha National Park, this former coffee estate is surrounded by forest and has a swimming pool set in lovely gardens which are home to a great variety of birds as well as monkeys. Your cool, clean-lined garden cottage has an en suite bathroom with shower and bathtub – a welcome sight after a long journey. Spa treatments are available and Rivertrees has complimentary Wi-Fi internet.

Days 2-3: Explore Ngorongoro | 2 Nights

Up arrow
Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

After breakfast at Rivertrees, it is time to sit back and let the Rift Valley landscape open up. Your guide drives across the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a vast swathe of rolling grassland that is home to much wildlife as well as Maasai cattle and their watchful herders. You enjoy a packed lunch on the road before arriving at Gibb’s Farm, a working coffee and dairy farm lying near the Ngorongoro Crater. Your cottage accommodation features indoor and outdoor showers plus a bathtub and a fireplace in your living area. Use the rest of the day to catch up on some rest and perhaps book a spa treatment or explore the area on nature walks, community visits or bird-watching trips. The next day is spent on a full-day safari in the Crater itself. Be on the lookout for the Big 5 – lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo!

Days 4-6: The Serengeti Migration | 3 Nights

Up arrow
Serengeti, Tanzania

A morning drive across the Ngorongoro plains to the Manyara airstrip gets you onto a flight and into the Serengeti an hour after take-off, leaving you with time to settle into your new accommodation - Kimondo Camp - before a 4-course dinner on the Serengeti. One of the Serengeti’s smaller camps, Kimondo is a mobile tented camp, moving with the rhythm of the annual Wildebeest Migration, its large walk-in tents set up under thorn trees and looking out over a vast, animal-filled savannah. You have two days of morning and afternoon game drives to look forward to, tracking the wildebeest herds as they move through their various chapters of the migration – the birthing season, the rutting season, and the much anticipated river-crossing season when the herds brave the snapping jaws of crocodiles as they cross the Serengeti’s rivers.

Days 7-9: A Zanzibar Retreat | 3 Nights

Up arrow
Zanzibar, Tanzania

The day begins with breakfast in the Serengeti but ends with dinner overlooking the Indian Ocean: a flight to Zanzibar gets you to Matemwe Lodge on the island’s north-eastern coast where you can throw down your bags and plan on doing as little or as much as you like. The lodge has access to the fabled reefs of the Mnemba Atoll for 5-star diving or you can grab a sea kayak or mask and snorkel and keep it local. There is a spa on site as well as Internet access, and we can organise tours to historic Stone Town and Jozani Forest or simply hop on a sunset dhow cruise. Your suite is set in a beautiful garden and has a private veranda complete with hammock and couch in which to sit back and soak up the experience.
