8-Day Mozambique's Gorongosa Restoration Project Safari
Per Person Sharing
8 days
Immerse yourself in the heartlands of Mozambique's wilderness with seven nights at Gorongosa National Park. Stay in two of the park's only lodgings and explore over a million acres where the revival of the region's biodiversity echoes across untouched landscapes. Heralded as one of Africa's last truly wild spaces, much of the park has remained untouched since the end of the civil war in the 1990s.
Your journey begins with three nights at Muzimu Lodge, poised on the edge of the Mussicadzi River. Next, you'll spend four nights at Chicari Camp, sublimely located in the wildlife-rich Chicari Pan. As an ecological hotspot, you will traverse vast landscapes and explore the park's hidden secrets.
Each excursion is tailored to your preferences. You can spend a morning exploring montane forests with the crunch of leaves underfoot, or chase the horizon in a game vehicle in search of the perfect spot to watch the sunset across undulating savannahs while sipping gin or wine.
The tour invites discerning explorers in search of a unique safari experience, where you're invited to embrace an intellect's safari. Partake in community visits, walk alongside pangolins, visit the park's research centre, and connect with nearby communities for a uniquely unforgettable safari.
When I chose Mozambique and the Gorongosa area it was based on seeing the Greg Clark 60 Minutes’ documentary. I can now say that the experience was well beyond my expectations. First, the land in the Gorongosa area is beautiful and varied. The Muzimu Tented Camp was first rate in the accommodations, food preparation, guides and total staff. My family was able to see many different wildlife as well as other experiences such as visiting the main camp with its research labs and visiting a beautiful waterfall going through towns and seeing all the children greeting us with waving hands and excitement.

Upon arrival at Beira International Airport, a charter flight will take you to Chitengo Airstrip. Touch down in Gorongosa National Park, greeted by the earthy scents of the Mozambican bushveld, the sun's gentle warmth on your skin, and the promise of three nights of luxury at Muzimu Lodge.
Your safari adventure begins with an afternoon game drive through the nearby riverine forests, filled with eager anticipation of your first wildlife sighting. The day ends with sundowners overlooking the undulating savannahs, followed by dining under the stars.
On your first full day, you can take part in a community visit. Beyond the confines of the park, you'll learn about key humanitarian initiatives of the Gorongosa Restoration Project. It is a deeply connecting experience where community enrichment and sustainable farming are the cornerstones. Back at the park, a stroll or cycling safari invites you to embrace the campgrounds at a leisurely pace, before heading out for an afternoon game drive.
The following day, it's all about conservation and science. Join the pangolins as they forage for food alongside the Pangolin Guardians that safeguard this threatened species. These walks form a crucial part of the pangolins’ rehabilitation process to allow them to forage safely, build up strength, and acclimate to the environment until they're ready to go off on their own. Â
You can also visit the E.O. Wilson Science Laboratories to learn about the discoveries of the resident researchers. The informative day ends with a sundowner game drive. Stop in a clearing to sip house wines as you soak in the final rays of sunlight.

Thank you once again for a very special memorable family trip.
The next day, you'll be chauffeured to a four night's stay at Chicari Camp for the dedicated safari portion of your journey. Here, you'll savour morning and afternoon safaris, tailored to your preferences, whether it is sticking to a classic game drive experience, or a combination of morning walking safaris and afternoon drives.
Your first day at Chicari begins with an exploration of the more remote corners of the park, either on foot or in a game vehicle. Followed by a picnic lunch served under the shade of trees before arriving back at camp to settle in. Your afternoon safari culminates in sundowner drinks around the campfire, sharing stories of the day's excursions.Â
The following days invite you to truly immerse yourself in the surroundings of Gorongosa, traversing diverse landscapes on foot or in a game vehicle in search of wildlife. From the savannahs dotted with prides of lions at sunset to the miombo forests as the morning rays ascend, catch a glimpse of the endemic suni antelope.Â
Set to the skies on an aerial tour – the perfect add-on for a bird’s-eye view over the park. Fly over the remote north-eastern region with its towering limestone cliffs and cascading waterfalls. A truly beautiful sight to behold from the skies. Your last evening at Gorongosa is marked by sundowners, gazing over the Lake Urema floodplains bathed in golden light—a breathtaking conclusion to your stay.
