Overview

Sit back and watch the northern Tanzanian landscape unfold as you travel between its most iconic wildlife destinations, safe in the hands of an experienced driver/guide. The tour opens with sweeping Rift Valley views from your Lake Manyara lodge before you explore the teeming Serengeti savannahs, home to the famous Wildebeest Migration from about November to June as well as stunning year-round big game.

The oversized drama continues as you visit the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. It is long-extinct and its grassy crater floor is now home to Africa’s densest concentration of large mammals including the Big 5 – lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo - which are usually all seen in a single day. This is one of the easiest places in Africa to tick off all of the Big 5. Then it is off to ‘Land of the Giants’ – Tarangire National Park – where you will be on the lookout for the largest elephant herds in the country plus big cats and enormous baobab trees, said by local folklore to have been planted upside down by hyenas.

Four nights at Karafuu Beach Resort in Zanzibar finish off the tour. A fight from Arusha takes care of what would be a long road journey and you have three full days to do as much or as little as you please at a resort with a reputation for its scuba diving. Accommodation at Karafuu is as it is all through the tour: comfortable and en suite at large to medium-sized lodges with facilities such as swimming pools, spa treatment rooms and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Detailed breakdown

Day 1: From Arusha to Lake Manyara | 1 Night

Up arrow
Lake Manyara

Your tour begins with a lunchtime pick up from Arusha town centre where you meet your guide and fellow travellers. The journey winds its way through a farming landscape before gaining height as you reach the edge of Africa’s Rift Valley and find Lake Manyara Kilimamoja Lodge. Set on the escarpment with panoramic views, this is your first night’s stop, a comfortable lodge with a swimming pool and spa. Your suite is air conditioned and has complimentary Wi-Fi as well as a fireplace and mini-bar. Settle in during the afternoon and find a spot to watch the sunset over Lake Manyara below you.

Days 2-3: Explore the Serengeti | 2 Nights

Up arrow
Serengeti

Your destination today is Serengeti National Park but first there is time for a game drive in Lake Manyara National Park first. Centred round the lake itself, the park makes the ideal introduction to northern Tanzania’s wildlife. Home to hippos and crocodiles as well as a vast number of birds, the park is prime habitat for elephants and buffalo, and your guide will be on the lookout for the lake’s famous tree-climbing lions, which clamber up the branches to escape the heat. After lunch at Lake Manyara Kilimamoja Lodge you travel onto the rolling plains of the Serengeti, enjoying great wildlife sightings as you approach your accommodation, Serengeti Sopa Lodge.

Set among hills in the south-western Serengeti, this lodge is right on the path of the seasonal Wildebeest Migration and promises spectacular game viewing. Such is the wealth of wildlife here that visitors are assured of excellent game sightings even out of the annual Migration season. Big cats and elephants are a permanent part of the landscape as are giraffe, zebra and many antelope species. You arrive in time for dinner and can go to bed looking forward to your morning and afternoon game drives the following day.

Days 4-5: Big 5 in Ngorongoro | 2 Nights

Up arrow
Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast you leave the Serengeti for the Ngorongoro Crater, making your way across a rolling countryside studded with traditional villages and red-robed Maasai farmers. A picnic lunch is enjoyed on the way, after which you visit a traditional Maasai village where you have an opportunity to meet the locals and learn about life on the savannah. Your accommodation lies a little further on – Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge, set high on the highest point of the Crater’s rim and offering spectacular sunset views.
The next day is yours on the Crater floor – a full-day safari in a destination often referred to as home to Africa’s easiest Big 5 viewing. Lion, elephant and buffalo are relatively easy to see and even the usually more elusive rhino and leopard are most often ticked off on a single day. You return to your centrally-heated room, complete with hot-water bottle to ensure complete comfort in the high-altitude chill.

Day 6: Travel to Tarangire | 1 Night

Up arrow
Tarangire

After breakfast you head in a southerly direction, travelling off the escarpment and into low-lying savannah and your destination: Tarangire National Park. A wilderness of woods and grasslands, Tarangire is home to large elephant herds and all the major predators plus giraffe, hippo, zebra and antelope. It is especially rewarding during the long dry season when great concentrations of animals gather at the life-giving Tarangire River. Entering the park, you enjoy a picnic lunch on board the vehicle and a game drive all the way to your accommodation - Tarangire Sopa Lodge, surrounded by the enormous baobab trees that characterise much of the landscape. There is time to relax before dinner; perhaps a swim in the pool or a quiet drink on your balcony with sunset views.

Day 7: Fly to the Indian Ocean coast | 4 Nights

Up arrow
Arusha

The day begins with breakfast at the lodge and the return drive to Arusha Airport. Arriving at lunchtime, you transfer to a scheduled flight to Zanzibar Airport where upon you are met on arrival and transferred to Karafuu Beach Resort for four nights. There is plenty of time to check in and take note of your new surroundings. Set in a private garden next to the Indian Ocean, your cottage accommodation features a large bedroom and dressing area plus a veranda with chairs. Comforts include air conditioning, Wi-Fi, a mini-bar, tea-and-coffee station and en suite bathroom.

Days 8-10: A Zanzibar Holiday

Up arrow
Zanzibar

Lying on a white-sand beach, Karafuu offers a blend of sports, activities and excursions along with the chance to do nothing at all but relax. It lies in an area with a reputation for scuba diving and has an in-house Dive Centre to cater for guests who wish to dive. There is also a gym and wellness spa as well as list of optional excursions such as Stone Town tours and trips to Jozani Forest – Zanzibar’s only national park. Excursions to experience a seafood beach picnic or a marine safari are also available.
The resort has plenty to keep you occupied: there is a large swimming pool (the resort itself has excellent swimming in the ocean, even at low tide) and there are several boutiques and convenient shops. Meals can be as varied as you like: the four restaurants at the resort serve everything from pizza and pasta to Middle Eastern and seafood specialities.

Day 11: The Journey Ends

Up arrow
Zanzibar

You enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the resort and a mid-morning check out before the hour-long road transfer to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport and your onward travel arrangements.
