Overview

A classic itinerary that will appeal to first-time safari travellers, wildlife enthusiasts and amateur nature photographers, this overland safari blends the big game of Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater with the raw drama of the Serengeti.

Available only in the best game-viewing, dry-season months of June to October, this tour focuses on wildlife and makes use of well-located accommodation to deliver a comprehensive and rewarding experience. You begin with the friendly charm of Rivertrees Country Inn, a guesthouse located between the airport and Arusha, thus giving you time to relax after your journey. Led by your experienced driver/guide, you then sit back and let northern Tanzania unfold from the windows of your 4X4; in the parks, the roof comes off to give you unfettered views of the wildlife.

Tarangire – home to giant elephant herds and great examples of the enormous baobab tree (the ‘upside-down tree’) - is your first destination. It is a place best visited during this dry June – October season, assuring you excellent game viewing at permanent rivers and waterholes. Then it is three nights on the Serengeti plains, enjoying sensational wildlife watching from a camp that moves with the migration to catch it at its most dramatic moments. Finish off with Big 5 viewing in the Ngorongoro Crater, returning from a full-day safari to your lodge, perched on the rim of the crater itself and with immense views as the backdrop for sunset drinks and safari stories.

Day 1: Relax in Arusha

Arusha, Tanzania
Detailed breakdown

Day 1: Relax in Arusha | 1 Night

Up arrow
Arusha, Tanzania

After arriving at Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met and transferred to Rivertrees Country Inn for your first night. Located halfway between the airport and the town of Arusha, this restored farmhouse has a riverside setting and makes the perfect place in which to relax and recharge after a long journey. There is a swimming pool and massage room as well as a sundeck with views over the Usa River, flanked by tall trees in which you may see blue vervet and colobus monkeys.

Day 2-3: Travel to Tarangire | 2 Nights

Up arrow
Tarangire, Tanzania

Famed for its dry-season game viewing, Tarangire National Park is one of northern Tanzania’s less-visited but most rewarding destinations. Your accommodation is Tarangire Ndovu Camp, a mobile tented camp set up at this time of year to take advantage of its location on an elephant migration path. Great numbers of elephants, their grey hides often coloured red with dust, move into the area around camp and provide fantastic photographic opportunities. Game viewing begins as soon as you enter the park and the roof of the 4X4 comes down, and your next day here is a full-day drive in the park. At camp you have all the comfort you need in your spacious, walk-in tent complete with private bathroom. There are battery-recharging points at main camp where you find the lamp-lit dining table and convivial campfire.

Day 4-6: Front-row Seats to the Migration | 3 Nights

Up arrow
Serengeti, Tanzania

You travel north, the Rift Valley landscape flattening out as the great savannahs of the Serengeti come into view. Home to millions of Africa’s large mammals, it is also the scene of the Wildebeest Migration and your accommodation - Nasikia Mobile Migration Camp – is one that follows the rhythm of the Migration. It is set up in just the right places at just the right time to bring you epic sightings of the raw, unedited nature of nearly two million animals – and their predators - on the move. There is time for an afternoon drive after your arrival and then you can look forward to two full days out on the Serengeti, complete with picnic lunch. There are also opportunities for cultural interactions and even an optional hot-air balloon safari, putting you high above the savannah at dawn for an unforgettable safari experience.

Day 7-8: A Rim with a View at Ngorongoro Crater | 2 Nights

Up arrow
Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

The day begins with a game drive all the way from your Serengeti camp to Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge. Friendly and welcoming, it is one of the few lodges located on the rim of the Crater and indeed the only lodge with its swimming pool also set on the edge, giving it perhaps the finest views of any pool anywhere! The lodge is a large, hotel-style resort with plenty of facilities including Wi-Fi - in the main building and by the pool, and your room is equipped with two queen-sized double beds and central heating for cold nights as well as a balcony with stunning Crater views. You have a full-day safari to look forward to the next day and you certainly need the full day: the crater is a steep-sided haven for incredible densities of wildlife with Ngorongoro enjoying something of a reputation as having Africa’s easiest Big 5 game viewing. A setting on the eastern side of the Crater means a quieter route down and fewer visitors as you make you way to the more popular western side of the Crater.

Day 9: The Journey Ends
