Day 1: Welcome to Botswana

Linyanti, Botswana
Detailed breakdown

Day 1: Welcome to Botswana | 2 Nights

Up arrow
Linyanti, Botswana

On arrival at Maun Airport you transfer to a light aircraft for your flight to Kings Pool Camp in the private Linyanti Game Reserve. Located just outside the Chobe National Park in 275 000 acres of unspoiled, crowd-free wilderness, Kings Pool Camp is a premier tented hideaway. Your home for the next two nights is built in the classic safari style of canvas and wood with folding doors that open to a private deck and plunge pool, overlooking the Linyanti lagoon.

One of Botswana’s best game viewing areas waits to be explored on morning and afternoon game drives and guided nature walks.

Day 2: Predators of the Savuti

Up arrow

Wildlife sightings in the Linyanti area are at their best during the dry season between June and October. At its peak, the crowds of elephant and buffalo can number in the thousands – and where buffalo thrive, you are likely to find healthy lion prides. Antelope and plains game are also plentiful attracting a range of predators from hyena to African wild dogs.

Seasonal summer rains provide the only surface water in this region, which means the wildlife congregates near waterholes as the land dries up in winter, providing the opportunity to witness dramatic encounters between predator and prey. When the land is at its driest, a natural spectacle unfolds as thousands of zebra pass through the area on their annual migration to the grasslands of the Mababe Depression.

Between expeditions into the wilderness, Kings Pool Camp provides a tranquil retreat. Spend the daily siesta (during the heat of the day when even the game retreats to rest in the shade) on your private deck with a good book, or settle down on a sun lounger on the main viewing deck where you can dip into the sparkling infinity pool to cool off.

Days 3-4: Okavango Delta: Jewel of the Kalahari | 2 Nights

Okavango Delta, Botswana

A short flight whisks you to Vumbura Plains North on the border of the Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta. Your home for the next two nights overlooks the floodplains of the game-rich Vumbura Reserve. The camp hosts an intimate seven tented suites raised on timber decks to command dramatic views across the lush plains. The design ethos is natural, light and airy, with vaulted thatch ceilings and a sunken lounge that flows onto a private deck complete with a plunge pool and loungers. The spacious suites are connected by walkways that meander beneath the leafy canopy of mature trees - the emphasis at this camp is on rest and relaxation between thrilling game drives.

Explore the floodplains on game drives and guided nature walks, and the dreamy waterways on traditional-style canoes – known as mokoro. Your guide propels your canoe with a long pole, allowing you to soak up the sites and sounds of this magical environment. Gliding silently along the water, without an engine to disturb the wildlife, you experience the wilderness in great detail – a jacana stepping delicately between lily pads, the tiny jewel-like frogs clinging to reeds, a glimpse of elegant aquatic antelope, sitatunga, darting across the shallows.

Days 5-6: An elephant's eye view | 2 Nights

Okavango Delta, Botswana

A short flight ferries you into the heart of the delta, to Abu Camp, overlooking a papyrus-fringed lagoon. Named in honour of its most famous resident elephant, a star of the big and silver screens, Abu Camp is home to the original elephant back safari. In addition to exploring the floodplains in the company of the camp’s resident elephant herd, there are daily game drives, canoe expeditions and guided nature walks.

The elephant excursions are unforgettable, whether you walk beside or ride these gentle giants. Led by an armed guide with a handler accompanying each adult elephant, the pace is slow and easy. The elephants browse along the way and you may be able to join them for a mud bath or even a swim. Walking through pristine wilderness, listening to the rumbling conversation of these dignified creatures and observing the close bonds between them and their handlers, is a true Bucket List experience and a deeply satisfying way to experience the delta.

Day 7: Farewell Botswana

Up arrow

After breakfast you begin your journey home with an air transfer to Maun for your outbound international flight. As the light aircraft arcs over the network of channels and lagoons that form the delta, the scent of wild sage lingers on your clothes and the cry of the fish eagle rings true in your heart. You have witnessed the drama of predator and prey on the Savuti plains, glimpsed a sitatunga melting wraith-like into the papyrus and walked beside an elephant in perfect harmony. You carry all the sights and sounds of an incredible journey home with you, leaving a little of your heart behind in the wilderness.
