Overview

Spend eight days in truly remarkable parts of Botswana. Start your journey at the confluence of two of the most contrasting worlds: Botswana’s lush Okavango Delta and the rugged Kalahari Desert where you explore the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park – one of the largest salt flats on the planet that attracts large herds of zebra and predators like wild dog, cheetah and desert specialists like black-maned lion.

Then move to a secluded gem in the Khwai River area, overlooking a private waterhole. Watch elephant and hippo relish the water from the comfort of your tented suite at Hyena Camp. Spend an unforgettable night sleeping under the stars in a skybed, an elevated platform that overlooks a well-frequented waterhole. These truly unique structures are situated well away from the main camp and consist of two levels: a bathroom on the lower floor and an open-air bedroom. Savour the sights and sounds of the African bush while you experience far-off sightings of wild dogs, lions, elephants or hyenas and gentle nocturnal species like porcupines, bushbabies and genets.

Spend your last few days at Sable Alley – a tented camp in a private concession alongside the Moremi Game Reserve. A safari in Moremi offers magnificent sightings of elephant and buffalo herds, as well as a plethora of bird species. Moremi is also one of Africa’s last remaining refuges for the highly endangered wild dog. Spend another memorable night under the African sky in one of Sable Alley’s starbeds.

Kalahari, Botswana
Detailed breakdown

Day 1: Welcome to Meno-a-Kwena | 2 Nights

Up arrow
Kalahari, Botswana

After your transfer from Maun Airport, you will receive a warm welcome at Meno-a-Kwena – an intimate, eco-friendly safari camp set on a hilltop overlooking the Boteti River. Settle into your spacious and private tented suite, equipped with a covered lookout area from which to sit and watch wildlife drink at the river below.

Later, hop on a boat to enjoy an afternoon cruise and marvel at the abundant birdlife and animals around the river then head back to camp after sunset to feast on a delicious meal prepared over an open fire.

Days 2-3: Explore the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park

Up arrow

Enjoy a fascinating cultural walking tour with local guides – the San people are Kalahari specialists and members of several indigenous hunter-gatherer tribes who represent the first nation of Southern Africa, and who know this landscape intimately.

Afterwards, climb aboard a game-drive vehicle and journey into the heart of the magnificent Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. After December and January’s summer rains, masses of zebra arrive to graze on the fresh savannah grass. The Kalahari’s vast salt pans erupt with life and the water attracts a multitude of animals and bird species. If you are visiting during the dry season – May to August – you will witness thrilling animal sightings like cheetah, wild dog and desert specialists like meerkat and black-maned lion.

Days 3-5: A secluded safari in Khwai River | 2 Nights

Up arrow
Moremi Game Reserve, Okavango Delta, Botswana

Transfer back to Maun Airport for a short flight to a private concession alongside the pristine Moremi Game Reserve. Hyena Pan Tented Camp is a hidden gem on the fringes of the Okavango Delta. Situated in the game-rich Khwai River area, one of the camp’s best features is its private waterhole – frequently visited by animals like elephants, hippos and giraffe. Settle into your comfortable tented suite and enjoy the superb views of the waterhole from your private outdoor patio.

Enjoy full-day game drives into Moremi, one of Africa’s most beautiful conservation areas. If you are visiting during the winter months (June to September), you will witness the Delta’s waterways swell with floodwaters from the Angolan highlands – providing fantastic game viewing as tens of thousands of thirsty animals come to drink in this World Heritage Site.

Enjoy relaxing afternoons in Hyena Pan’s pool-with-a-view or outdoor seating areas as you get up close and personal with your pachyderm neighbours. Delicious 3-course dinners are served under the stars.

Day 5: Sleep under the stars in a skybed | 1 Night

Botswana

Spend a truly unforgettable night in one of Hyena Camp’s skybeds – platforms that are elevated five metres / 15 feet above ground level, overlooking a well-frequented waterhole. These skybeds are situated away from the main camp, offering you the opportunity to see animals like wild dogs, lions, elephants and hyena as they pass by. Lie in bed and marvel at the spectacular African night sky, while listening to the sounds of nocturnal animals like porcupines, bushbabies, jackals and honey badgers. This is undoubtedly a very special experience!

Day 6-8: Privacy and exclusivity in the Okavango Delta | 2 Nights

Up arrow
Okavango Delta, Botswana

Your final location on the tour is Sable Alley, which is situated in a private concession alongside the majestic Moremi Game Reserve, with breath-taking views over the Delta’s floodplains. Herds of elephant and buffalo can often be seen wandering around Sable Alley, which is named after one of Africa’s rarest antelopes.

The spacious tented suites are set on wooden decks and offer wonderful views of the camp’s resident waterhole. Enjoy a shady afternoon on the main lookout deck, or sink into a sun lounger by the pool. End your days by the fire pit with a drink from the camp’s bar.

Go out on guided game drives in Moremi Game Reserve, sighting predators like lion, leopard, wild dog, cheetah, crocodile and spotted hyena. Enjoy the rare privilege of being able to drive off-road for those extra close wildlife encounters. Hop on a mokoro (traditional canoe) to explore the waters around camp.

Sable Alley also offers the fantastic opportunity to spend a night in one of their star-beds – set high in the trees, overlooking a waterhole in the wildlife-rich Moremi and equipped with lanterns to create a romantic ambiance, and conveniently appointed bathrooms with flushing toilets. This is a unique way to experience the African bush.
