6-Day Edge of the Earth: Echo Camp & Antarctic Beginnings
Answer the call of the unknown and experience a once-in-a-lifetime journey to the Earth's final frontier – the Seventh Continent. Long celebrated for its role in scientific discovery and legendary expeditions, Antarctica remains one of the most untouched and least-visited places on the planet. This is the only continent without a native human population, home instead to towering ice sheets, extraordinary wildlife, and an unmatched commitment to preservation.
Your expedition begins in Cape Town, where you'll board White Desert's private aircraft and fly directly to Antarctica. Spend five nights at the exclusive Echo Camp—futuristic, sustainable, and designed for comfort in an unforgiving landscape. One of the highlights will be a flight to visit the emperor penguin colony with their young chicks at Atka Bay, a rare and moving sight. Back at camp, your days are filled with activities like glacier hikes, snow sled adventures, and ice climbing—designed for every level of thrill-seeker. Important to note: this journey is only possible in the latter half of November, when conditions are just right—chat to us for available dates.
Our partners, White Desert, have a strong ethos of responsible tourism which mirrors our own. In the words of Sir David Attenborough, “No one will protect what they don't care about, and no one will care about what they have never experienced.” Seeing Antarctica firsthand fosters a deep appreciation for this fragile environment—and helps fund ongoing conservation efforts. And while you're this side of the globe, why not pair your polar adventure with a Big 5 safari in South Africa? Two iconic, unforgettable landscapes in one journey.
As part of your journey, please note that booking two nights in Cape Town—before and after your Antarctic adventure—is a mandatory part of the trip due to weather unpredictability. This gives you the perfect opportunity to explore the vibrant Mother City, and with your trip taking place in November, you're likely to enjoy sunny days discovering Cape Town's beautiful beaches. Our Africa Safari Experts are happy to assist in selecting the perfect accommodation for your stay.
The day before departure is Antarctica Brief Day! This session is a key part of the experience, where the team will walk you through what to expect on the trip, essential safety guidelines, and the environmental protocols that help protect this pristine continent. You’ll also meet the guest experience team, who will personally check and sort through your gear to ensure everyone is properly equipped for the adventure ahead.
It's important to remember that all activities and travel to and within Antarctica is entirely weather-dependent. This itinerary offers a framework of what to expect, but flexibility is essential. The number of nights on the continent is carefully planned and remains the goal for every journey. However, due to the remote nature of the region, occasional weather delays may slightly adjust the duration—an inherent part of travelling to Antarctica. Mother Nature is in charge down here, and that unpredictability is part of what makes this such a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
Today, you'll make your way to Cape Town International Airport for check-in with White Desert. Since the Antarctic landing strip is privately owned, access is only possible via private aircraft. White Desert's specialised fleet is best equipped to handle the entire journey.
As you soar over the vast Southern Ocean and cross into the Polar Circle, you'll begin to see the endless white expanse of Antarctica unfolding below. During the continent's perpetual summer daylight, you'll touchdown on a blue ice runway and be greeted by the freshest air imaginable—and the warm smiles of the ground team.
A short transfer brings you to Echo Camp, your base for the next five nights. After a welcome tour and a hearty meal, take a moment to settle into your Sky Pod and soak in the surreal views. If you're feeling energised, head out for a gentle fat-bike ride to explore the surroundings.
In the evening, while the sun lingers just above the horizon—never quite setting—you'll tuck into a sumptuous dinner. Your pod is prepared to block out the daylight completely, ensuring a restful night's sleep despite the Antarctic summer season sunlight.
Wake up in your heated Sky Pod to a surreal landscape of ice and soft light as you open up your blackout blinds. After a freshly brewed coffee and a warm breakfast in the dining pod, your guide briefs you on what's on offer for the day.
Essentially, you may do as much or as little as you'd like. You might set off by sled across vast ice fields, climb or abseil a glacier's blue-ice walls, summit Nanutak, or explore an ice tunnel sculpted by meltwater. For something slower paced, join a guided walk to learn about the surrounding geology and wildlife.
Back at camp, warm up in the sauna pod while gazing out at the polar views, indulge in a restorative massage or unwind in the lounge with a book and a glass of South African wine. Dinner is a fine-dining affair—plated courses prepared by your private chef and shared with your fellow explorers in the dining pod.
Then it's time to retreat to your pod for another peaceful night at the bottom of the world.
After a warm breakfast and your choice of freshly brewed coffee or tea, get ready for one of the most iconic experiences in Antarctica. You'll board a Basler BT-67 aircraft—a specially adapted polar plane—for a 2.5-hour flight over the dramatic High Polar Plateau to reach Atka Bay, home to one of the continent's largest emperor penguin colonies.
With over 28,000 emperor penguins gathering here each season, Atka Bay offers a rare and intimate glimpse into the early life of this iconic species. Visiting from the Antarctic interior means you'll arrive earlier than most—while the fast ice is still intact and the chicks are just beginning to step off their parents' feet, still wrapped in their soft grey down. It's a narrow window in the season, and one of the few chances to observe this stage of the emperor penguin life cycle in such a pristine, undisturbed setting.
Under the guidance of expert naturalists, and always following strict IAATO* protocols, you'll experience their remarkable behaviours up close—watching adults feed chicks, communicate with signature calls, and huddle for warmth in a sophisticated, coordinated dance of survival.
This is more than a wildlife encounter—it's a front-row seat to one of the most extraordinary natural spectacles on Earth. With no natural predators on land, emperor penguins are remarkably unafraid of humans—but we take great care to ensure our presence doesn't disturb their natural rhythm.
After your return flight to camp, a delicious dinner awaits, followed by a hot shower and a quiet retreat to your cosy Sky Pod for a well-earned rest.
*IAATO (International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators) environmental guidelines prohibit physical contact and stipulate a safe minimum 5m (16.4ft) distance from wildlife; guests are also advised to sit down to view the penguins and to retreat if they approach closer than 5m (16.4ft).
The next day brings a fresh opportunity for adventure right around camp. Take an excursion to explore the surrounding mountains, starting with a gentle hike offering breathtaking views over endless ice sheets. To top it off, indulge in a champagne picnic, celebrating the stunning Antarctic landscape.
But the adventure doesn’t stop there. With your guide, head to a special vantage point for an incredible panoramic view of the mountains you’ve just explored—a perfect moment for capturing the beauty of this wild place.
On day five, gauge how adventurous are you feeling. If you're up to something more daring, take on a more challenging hike along an ice shelf with an expert mountain guide. The views are nothing short of spectacular, and the sense of accomplishment makes it a rewarding experience.
For those who prefer something less adrenaline-inducing, other activities are available—it's all up to you.
Wake up and take a moment to reflect on the incredible experiences you've had and enjoy a last breakfast looking out over the icy desert expanse beyond. A transfer takes you back to the airstrip where you'll bid farewell and board the flight back to Cape Town.
If you’re able to find a better quote for your itinerary let us know and we’ll match it.
What makes this journey truly stand out is the timing—you'll witness emperor penguin chicks at their tiniest, testing the ice after their first days being tucked between their parents' feet. Most visitors to Antarctica never get to see this stage of life. Pair that with the surreal setting of Echo Camp—futuristic pods, incredible views, and the thrill of being so far from anything familiar—and you've got an experience that's genuinely once-in-a-lifetime.
