Overview

Zambia’s Luangwa Valley is one of Africa’s most rewarding wildlife destinations and this is your chance to explore two different areas of it. Highly recommended for seasoned safari-goers and wildlife photographers and enthusiasts, this affordable tour opens with three nights at Flatdogs Camp, set next door to the entrance to South Luangwa National Park. It is a destination renowned for its game viewing, especially during the mid-year dry season when animals are concentrated in huge numbers at the Luangwa River. Home to large populations of elephant, buffalo, hippo and giraffe, the South Luangwa is a noted predator paradise and your guide will be on the lookout for lion, leopard, cheetah as well as spotted hyena and wild dog.

You will sit back on morning and afternoon game drives as well as spot-lit night drives; the South Luangwa is one of the few national parks where this exciting activity is allowed, and you have the opportunity to explore on foot too, in the company of your guide and armed ranger.

Then it is on to the little known and even less-visited Luambe National Park where your accommodation – Luambe Camp – is the only one in the entire park. Built on the banks of the Luangwa River, this tented accommodation has amazing views and one of the river’s biggest pods of hippopotamus right in front of camp. You have three full days to discover the park, enjoying exclusive sightings of Africa’s most iconic animals as well as some of its rarer and more elusive ones at the camp’s floodlit waterhole. There is a final night back at Flatdogs before returning via light aircraft flight to Lusaka.

'A Luangwa adventure! Start your safari at Flatdogs Safari Camp in the south of the park. Here you will enjoy walking out into the African bush with your guide or game watching from your 4x4 game-drive vehicle. After three nights here, you then head to the north, driving through Luangwa and into the Luambe National Park to spend your next four nights at Luambe, a remote camp far away from the crowds. You then return to Flatdogs for your last night before flying home from Mfuwe Airport.'

Day 4-7: Exclusive Luambe | 4 Nights

Up arrow
South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

A morning's drive north from Flatdogs takes you to the woodlands and wetlands of Luambe National Park, where you check in at Luambe Camp for four nights. The only accommodation in the park, the camp is a small and intimate affair, guaranteeing you exclusive game sightings. Its solar-powered tented suites have wonderful views over the Luangwa River and the several hundred hippos that live in this particular stretch of it. Game drives and guided walks are again the main activities - take some time to do some bird watching too and keep an eye on the camp's waterhole: the local leopard often drinks from it.

Day 8: Return to Flatdogs | 1 Night

Up arrow

After breakfast at Luambe Camp it is time to sit back and enjoy the return drive to Flatdogs Camp, no doubt with wildlife sightings on the way. You arrive in time for lunch before heading out on an afternoon game drive after which you can reclaim a familiar seat by the campfire, order a drink and compare Luangwa with Luambe as the stars come out to claim the night.
