Go on a magical four-day adventure to one of Southern Africa’s least visited safari destinations – the Makgadikgadi Pans in central Botswana, a haunting landscape of pancake-flat salt pans surrounded by rolling grasslands and scattered woodland. You will be staying at the exclusive and romantic San Camp in a luxurious tent beneath the African stars.
Exciting activities await: go on quad-bike (ATV) excursions across the boundless salt pans, discover enigmatic archaeological sites and learn a few secrets from the Kalahari’s San Bushmen.
There are a lot more animals in the region than you might think so you will also be going on game drives in search of the Kalahari’s wildlife. Top of the must-see list are the big cats – lion, cheetah and leopard are all resident – plus the shy brown hyena, and playful and curious meerkats.

Itinerary
Day to day
Arrive at Maun Airport today and board your flight to Jack’s Camp private airstrip. Here you will be met and transferred to San Camp, a luxury tented camp set at the heart of one of Africa’s most extraordinary locations, the Makgadikgadi Pans, once the deepest part of a super-lake that covered most of Botswana.
Enjoy two full days on safari surrounded by the stark beauty of the vast Makgadikgadi Pans, set within the rolling, golden grasslands of the Kalahari. There are many opportunities for adventure in this virtually unvisited region – kick off with an exploration of the seemingly boundless Makgadikgadi salt pans themselves – you will even make a stop at a fascinating archaelogical site, incongruously located in this seemingly inhospitable environment.
Game drives are offered in the morning and late afternoon – pay an early morning visit to a family of endearing and curious meerkats before an afternoon in search of one of Africa’s rarest large carnivores – the brown hyena. The general game viewing away from the salt pans can be very rewarding, especially during the rainy summer months when large numbers of zebra and wildebeest arrive. All the major predators are resident in the area with lion and cheetah often seen.
Bird watching is good all year round but keen birders should visit from December to April when many migrant species have arrived. You will also admire Chapman’s Baobab – apparently the third largest tree in Africa, and learn about the history of the early explorers of the area such as Baines and Livingstone.
Return to Jack Camp’s private airstrip and board your flight to Maun where you will continue with your own onward arrangements.
