Highlights

  • Great mix of game viewing by 4x4 vehicle and on foot
  • Private and exclusive wildlife destinations throughout Kenya
  • Excellent for seasonal Wildebeest Migration viewing
  • Unique Samburu walking safari with camel train

Overview

Three of Kenya’s best private wildlife destinations are on this safari's itinerary, and you can experience them in different ways. Your adventure opens on the rim of Africa’s Rift Valley on the Laikipia Plateau where you explore big game country on foot with Samburu warriors for the company and a camel train to carry the luggage as you move between camps. Then it is a change of scene at Porini Rhino Camp, set in Laikipia’s famous Ol Pejeta Conservancy. You can expect to see great wildlife including East Africa’s largest population of black rhinos on your game drives and guided walks.

A flight from Laikipia takes you quickly and conveniently to the Masai Mara, your final destination. Home to the seasonal Wildebeest Migration, the Mara is at its most dramatic when the herds are resident between July and November. This reserve also has a stellar reputation for game viewing throughout the year and your accommodation – Porini Mara Camp – is a small and intimate tented camp situated in the exclusive Ol Kinyei wildlife conservancy, a successful local Maasai-run conservation initiative.

Adventurous, extremely comfortable and with an emphasis on providing a diverse wildlife and cultural experience, this tour is ideal for travellers looking for a slightly different safari from the mainstream. Its lovely accommodation and high service standards mean it is also suited to fit honeymooners and active couples.

Days 1-4: Exploring Laikipia on Foot

Kenya
Detailed breakdown

Days 1-4: Exploring Laikipia on Foot | 3 Nights

Up arrow
Kenya

Your adventure begins at Nairobi’s Wilson Airport, where you board a short, scheduled flight to Nanyuki Airport. From here you are driven for about two hours to your tented camp, Tumaren – enjoying wildlife sightings along the way. You settle in, enjoy lunch and have a short walk with your guide to get a feel for the landscape – this is the Laikipia region, part of the elevated lands of the Great Rift Valley and an area of thriving private reserves and wildlife conservancies.

You start your days early: it is best to head out before the heat of the day and to catch the more interesting animals on the move. Moving on foot with your Samburu guides, you notice more details than you would from a vehicle. Your guides point out both the big and the small – you may see beautiful Grevy’s zebra, giraffe, big cats, wild dog and hyenas in the distance as well as birds, insects and medicinal plants up close. Your camp is coming with you, borne on the back of a Samburu camel train and set up for you to walk into at the end of the day. It is easy walking with lots to see, and on the third day you have an afternoon of swimming and fishing in the Ewaso Nyiro River to look forward to – followed by an evening walk to a scenic spot for sundowner drinks and stunning views of Mount Kenya.

Days 4-6: Discover the Land of the Rhino | 2 Nights

Up arrow
Kenya

After breakfast you will be driven to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy and Porini Rhino Camp, perched beside a gorgeous seasonal stream in the foothills of Mount Kenya. Spend your days on game drives tracking the Big 5 with Maasai guides – Ol Pejeta is home to four of the last seven remaining northern white rhino in the world. You also have the opportunity to visit a sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees and meet Baraka, Ol Pejeta’s black rhino ambassador. Baraka was rescued after he became totally blind and unable to survive in the wild.

Masai Mara, Kenya

You transfer back to the airstrip after breakfast for the flight to the Masai Mara. On landing, you are met and transferred to the Ol Kinyei Conservancy and Porini Mara Camp, where you settle in for a 3-night stay. Set close to the Masai Mara and on the path of the seasonal Wildebeest Migration, this private and exclusive location gives you the advantage of excellent game viewing – look out for elephants, buffalo, giraffe and the Mara’s famous big cats – plus very few other vehicles. Guides can drive off-road for close-up sightings and are allowed to lead walking safaris and spot-lit night drives, all adding up to deliver a comprehensive Masai Mara experience. Game drives are conducted in the conservancy, but you also enjoy a full-day safari in the Masai Mara complete with picnic lunch.
