  • Seasonal mid-year Wildebeest Migration in Masai Mara

A night Nairobi hotel begins this safari: it looks out over the thorn trees of Nairobi National Park and you spend time at a giraffe centre and elephant sanctuary, setting the scene nicely for the week ahead on safari. Enjoying the convenience of fly-in logistics, you divide your time between two very different regions of Kenya – the Laikipia Plateau and the Masai Mara – which between them showcase the best of the country’s wildlife and scenery.

Laikipia lies in a beautiful Rift Valley landscape and is a bastion of Kenyan conservation; its privately-run reserves are home to the Big 5 – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. The Masai Mara is most famous for the mid-year Migration, when nearly two million wildebeest and zebra move through the area, providing an unforgettable feast of nature. It is a time of big cats on the hunt and crocodiles lunging from muddy waters. Such is the scale of the Mara’s wildlife, however, that it remains a stellar game viewing destination throughout the year.

You have the advantage of staying in private concessions, heading out on morning and afternoon game drives for exclusive game sightings. There is also time to absorb local Maasai culture through personal interactions and visits to their schools and communities. There are opportunities to go on fascinating walks with expert guides and visit a chimpanzee sanctuary as well as optional activities such as hot-air balloon safaris and spot-lit night drives. Wonderful Out of Africa scenery dominates the week, and with accommodation offered in large, family-size tents with crisply made beds and en suite bathrooms, you have everything you need for comfort and relaxation at the end of the day.

'One of the best ways to ensure you have an excellent chance to see the Big 5 with your family is by combining Ol Pejeta - known for great rhino sightings - with the famous Masai Mara. Enjoy the combination of a bush camp and permanent tented camp with a focus on service and hospitality at a great price. If travelling with children, they will enjoy the view of the open plains with roaming game from the pool at Kichwa Tembo.'

Day 1: Overnight in Nairobi

Detailed breakdown

Day 1: Overnight in Nairobi | 1 Night

Up arrow

Your family is met by a tour representative just after landing and you enjoy their assistance in getting though customs and immigration, after which you are escorted to your private vehicle and qualified driver. After checking in at Ole Sereni Hotel, there is time to visit Nairobi's must-see institutions: the Giraffe Centre and the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Sanctuary. Along with views of the savannah from your hotel, your time with the Rothschild's giraffes and orphaned elephants combine to create an unforgettable feeling of being on safari while still in the bustling capital. If you would like to relax after your long-haul flight, Ole Sereni has a health centre and swimming pool.

Day 2-3: Mount Kenya Views & the Big 5 | 2 Nights

Up arrow

After breakfast at the hotel you are collected and driven to Nairobi's domestic Wilson Airport for a flight to Nanyuki Airstrip, gateway to the Laikipia Plateau. Your accommodation for the next two nights is Ol Pejeta Bush Camp. It lies just north of the equator but with an average altitude of 2 000 metres / 6 500 feet above sea level, Laikipia's climate is temperate and the nights are refreshingly cool. With classic views of Mount Kenya, Ol Pejeta has a riverside setting in a private concession and makes the perfect start to your safari. Its roomy tented suites have en suite bathrooms and outdoor seating areas from which to enjoy the views. Game drives take you in search of Ol Pejeta's Big 5 as well as a host of other animals. You also enjoy guided bush walks, community interactions and a visit to the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Why not spend a night in a hide overlooking the well-frequented waterhole, complete with night vision monocular?

Day 4-7: Onto the Masai Mara | 4 Nights

Up arrow
Masai Mara, Kenya

A flight from Laikipia takes you to a different landscape, one that is more open and flatter: the savannah of the Masai Mara National Reserve. Your destination - Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp - is one of the best-loved in Kenya and its swimming pool is reckoned to have the best view in the Masai Mara. Regardless of whether it is Migration season or not, the camp offers an unforgettable Mara experience, offering morning and afternoon game drives to soak up the drama. There are always predators to be found - lions, leopard and cheetah as well as hyenas and the ever-present crocodiles in the river, patiently waiting for the wildebeest to arrive. Elephant, buffalo and giraffe are among the heavyweight species; wild dogs, smaller cats and eagle-owls are among the rarer sightings. Enjoy discoveries of a different sort by talking to young Maasai warriors about life on the savannah or reach for the sky on an optional hot-air balloon safari. Attentive staff and expert guides make sure it all happens smoothly and seamlessly.
