Livingstone, Hwange and Lake Kariba
Spend 10 days in three of Southern Africa's often-overlooked destinations, yet sensational slices of wilderness that pack a huge punch when it comes to luxury and big game viewing far from the madding crowds. Plus, every booking of this itinerary will include a contribution of two stationery packs that will be donated to the children at Maunga Primary School, as part of our Positive Impact initiative.
Start your vacation in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park at a luxurious lodge on the banks of the gorgeous Zambezi River. The eco-conscious Thorntree River Lodge is located just upstream from the world's biggest curtain of falling water, Victoria Falls. With an exclusive-use boat, temperature-controlled wine collection and private plunge pools, it's one of Zambia's most indulgent and contemporary lodges.
Then escape to an exquisite acacia-forested island along the edge of an ancient floodplain in Zimbabwe's biggest reserve, Hwange National Park. This immense area is a haven for large numbers of buffalo and elephant. In fact, Hwange's elephant population is the second largest in the world. Your accommodation – Somalisa Camp – is situated in a private concession which means that you will enjoy walking safaris, night drives and game viewing from secret hides – special safari activities not permitted in the public park.
Cap your safari experience with three nights at the magical Bumi Hills Safari Lodge, nestled in the remote hills that cradle the gorgeous Lake Kariba. Spend your last few days of this trip marvelling at the breath-taking views over the lake and the greater Zambezi River Escarpment. Soak up the sun beside Bumi's famous infinity-edge swimming pool, and let your soul be stirred by the see-it-to-believe-it sunsets over Lake Kariba.
When you book this safari Go2Africa will donate $30 to Maunga Village Primary School near Livingstone, to improve the school's facilities and provide access to food for learners.
Thorntree still offers exceptional service from a wonderful team, the trees have grown beautifully since I was last there for the opening to provide pools of shade and the riverfront views from the communal deck or your own suite provide a welcome respite after a busy safari, still one of my favourite lodges in Africa! We also spent a morning in Maunga Village, helping with the school feeding program and to paint the newly built ablutions & renovated classrooms which was such a privilege!
Welcome to Africa! After landing at Zambia's Livingstone Airport, you will be transferred to the stunning Thorntree River Lodge. Built with an environmentally-conscious design, your suite boasts a gorgeous private pool, and its own indoor and outdoor bathroom. By day you will go on game drives in Mosi-oa-Tunya, visit the world's biggest waterfall, and go on cultural village visits. Cap it with sensational cruises at sunset in Thorntree's private boat.

Both are great camps with Main having the luxury touch and lots of public space (plus a lovey plunge pool). Tented rooms at Main are large and very comfortable. Food, staff and service were all really great.
Game drives were excellent. Much more open scenery and a good amount of game, particularly elephants and lots of lions. We had the most wonderful experience of being stood in the middle of 100 plus elephants drinking our G&T's at sunset while they drank at the waterhole. Totally magical.
Flight transfers between camps were great. All very professional and all went as planned. The aircraft was a Cessna Caravan (12-seater) so very comfortable.
After checking out from Thorntree River Lodge, you will enjoy a road transfer to Victoria Falls International Airport for your short-haul flight into Hwange. Also known as ‘the land of the giants', Hwange is home to the second-largest elephant population in the world. Your accommodation, Somalisa Camp, is tucked away on a gorgeous acacia island on the edge of an ancient floodplain. Your elegant tented suite is equipped with a glass wood-burner fireplace and an en-suite bathroom featuring a copper slipper-style bathtub. Spend your days exploring this beautiful wilderness area on game drives and nature walks with passionate guides. Experience unique activities like night game drives and game viewing from special hides. Or simply sit back, relax with a cold beverage in hand and enjoy an ‘armchair safari' on Somalisa's viewing deck overlooking its Elephant Pool – a natural waterhole where a variety of game congregate to drink.
