Namibia Family Self-Drive
Discover highlights of Namibia – Etosha National Park, Swakopmund and Sossusvlei – at your own pace on this 10-day self-drive adventure.
Beginning in Windhoek, this comprehensive itinerary takes you to the private Onguma Game Reserve on the outskirts of the game-packed Etosha National Park before arriving in the rugged Damaraland region where you can view ancient rock art at Twyfelfontein and search for the unique desert elephant.
Drive from desolate Damaraland to Namibia’s undisputed playground, Swakopmund, on the striking Atlantic coast for a taste of the area’s adrenalin-filled activities. Finally, head inland to the Namib Desert to view, and even climb, the enormous red sand dunes at Sossusvlei before returning to Windhoek.
Great insight to the conservation efforts in Namibia with comfortable accommodation and great views! Highly recommend the View Rooms.
On arrival in Windhoek, Namibia’s pleasant capital city, collect your rental vehicle and drive to the Okonjima Plains Camp for the night. Settle in and unwind in the camp’s swimming pool or simply relax on the wooden veranda, but be sure to visit the Africat project to learn about the local carnivores.

Onguma is a lovely place. We liked it very much. Our waterhole chalets were perfect. We walked with a guide and found ourselves next to a lion killing a warthog. We also had very good sightings at the waterhole Klein-Namutoni.
Enjoy breakfast at Okonjima Plains Camp before hopping into your rental vehicle and driving to the Onguma Private Game Reserve on the border of the Etosha National Park. Check into Onguma Bush Camp before beginning your exploration of this wildlife-rich area – although you do not have to go very far to see animals: sip on a refreshing drink as you sit on the lodge’s game-viewing platform which overlooks the much-frequented waterhole.
Enjoy self-drive excursions through Etosha over the next two days – the park is easy to drive around and has an excellent blend of classic savannah game species and desert specialists, and it is a destination famous for predators, black rhino and elephant.

One highlight was our first night at Doro Nawas Camp. We were the only guests and they set up the most lovely table for us in the courtyard by the fire. It was beautiful!! Then the next night we had a rooftop dinner under the stars!
Make your way after breakfast to the rugged Damaraland region where you’ll stay at Doro Nawas Camp for two nights. It’s a desolate region at first glance but it’s also an area of great beauty and has surprisingly good wildlife too. Cool off in the swimming pool or enjoy a drink at the bar before watching the sunset from the roof – and once it’s dark, enjoy some spectacular stargazing.

Take a trip to Twyfelfontein where you can see ancient San (Bushman) rock engravings, part of the largest collection of prehistoric rock art in Africa. Enjoy game viewing along dry riverbeds and tangled thickets too, and keep an eye out for elusive desert-adapted elephants and other wildlife in this wild but rewarding region.
Swakopmund. A magnificence town where we managed to free-fall, quad bike ( I turned one over which I don't recommend), fly over Sousesfli, do the township tour, obvious see the seal colonies and pelicans ( Kayak if you want to get really close) , oil rigs, play golf, and eat well — and there were still things to do when we left.
Swakopmund Guest House had its own private courtyard for us and was friendly and helpful. If you want to go to the Tug restaurant, i.e. the very popular, you need to book weeks ahead.
This morning you’ll drive to Namibia’s Atlantic coastline and the Swakopmund Guesthouse in the quaint, German-colonial town of Swakopmund. There are plenty of adventure activities on hand in Namibia’s holiday playground – quadbiking on nearby sand dunes, sky diving and sandboarding to name a few – but you can also wander the friendly streets and visit boutique craft shops, coffee shops and cafes.

This was another highlight of the trip. Namibia and Kuala were beyond our wildest dreams. Full disclosure, when we first got there, we were all a bit reluctant and asking ourselves what we had done, but by the time we stopped that first afternoon on our nature drive for our sundowner drinks, we were all mind-blown. The desert was beautiful. It was so odd to us how something so vast and large could have things actually survive in it and that there were parts of the world that have completely been untouched by humans. We LOVED the desert and the Namibian people. Hiking Big Daddy and seeing the scenery was a highlight of the trip. We loved it. We also enjoyed sleeping outside on the roof whi...

It was so odd to us how something so vast and large could have things actually survive in it and that there were parts of the world that have completely been untouched by humans. We LOVED the desert and the Namibian people. Hiking Big Daddy and seeing the scenery was a highlight of the trip. We loved it. We also enjoyed sleeping outside on the roof while looking at the stars each night. The accommodations were pristine and the service was great (not as attentive as Simbavati, but no complaints at all. We kept telling ourselves…we are in the middle of the desert! How could anyone complain about the rooms, food, and having running water in the middle of the desert).
Wake up early and embark on a guided trip to Sossusvlei to experience the famous red dunes up close. At up to 300 metres high, these dunes are said to be some of the world’s tallest – and you can find out for yourself: stop at Dune 45 and climb to the top. Set out with your guide in the afternoon for a nature walk around the lodge’s private reserve.
Experience the dramatic Namib landscape from above in a hot-air balloon and enjoy a champagne breakfast before ending your Namibian self-drive adventure in Windhoek. Return the rental vehicle at the airport and board your outbound flight.
