Pretoria to Cape Town Journey
This three-day luxury train journey is a testament to South Africa being known as a world in one country. This 1600km (994miles) tour winds its way through the diverse South African landscape: through grasslands of the Highveld to the more arid Great Karoo and ends in the Mother City, Cape Town.
Highlights of this trip include the ambience of old-world style travelling – elegant and graceful – with stops in Matjiesfontein and Kimberley. Matjiesfontein is a perfectly preserved Victorian village that was founded as a refreshment stop in 1890 and has an impressive museum. Another stop is made in Kimberley, with a visit to the Diamond Mine Museum and the world's largest man-made excavation, the Big Hole.
Train is definitely something I would recommend (I liked that we did the Pretoria-Vic Falls way (as opposed to the other way around) since it gave us a sense of “destination”.
Upon arrival at Rovos Rail’s private Capital Park Station, enjoy a refreshing pre-departure glass of champagne. Depart in the afternoon and spend the evening at leisure aboard the luxury South African steam train – dubbed the ‘Pride of Africa'. Enjoy the passing scenery as you relax in the lounge car or your private suite.

Shortly after breakfast you arrive in the mining town of Kimberley where the train will stop briefly for the morning, giving you the time to visit the Big Hole and the Diamond Museum. Explore part of this quaint mining town which includes a trip on an old-fashioned tram. Return to the train to enjoy a delicious lunch as the steam train commences the next part of your South African train journey.
You'll arrive in the historic town of Matjiesfontein where you'll stop for a day visit. Take a bonafide trip back in time where you will take a trip on the Old London Bus, revel in the history of the Transport and Victorian museums and marvel at the gracious grand dame, the Lord Milner Hotel. You will then reboard the train and enjoy afternoon tea in the lounge before departing.
Breakfast is served in the dining cars while you continue your journey through the picturesque Cape Winelands. The train will reach South Africa’s most beautiful city – Cape Town – in the morning where you will disembark, greeted by the majesty of Table Mountain.
