Mobile camping is rapidly gaining in popularity as more and more safari fans seek out a more authentic and closer-to-nature way of experiencing Africa’s greatest wildernesses. On this 7-day mobile camping safari, you will immerse yourself in a private reserve in Botswana’s immense and irreplaceable Okavango Delta.

Taking off from the large town of Maun, you will fly into Xakanaxa on the banks on the Khwai River and then make your way to a temporary campsite in the Moremi Game Reserve. The goal of mobile camping is to leave no trace in the bush so no permanent structures, swimming pools or spas are built; accommodation is in comfortable but basic Meru or dome tents.

After three days of game viewing, star gazing and eating around the fire at Moremi, you will move to another campsite further along the Khwai River with your highly experienced private guide. Three more blissful nights among the trees, birds and animals of the Delta culminate with a short flight back to Maun.

Detailed breakdown

Days 1-4: The beauty of Moremi | 6 Nights

Up arrow

At Maun Airport, you will take off in a light aircraft for the short hop to Xakanaxa Airstrip in the Moremi Game Reserve, which is in Botswana’s magical Okavango Delta. A flight over the Delta gives you an unusual perspective of this immense wetland – look out for herds of elephants, pods of hippos and groups of a lazy crocodiles dotted on the myriad islands below.

Soon you will be touching down at Xakanaxa, where you will be meet by your private guide and make your way to a secluded, non-permanent campsite deep in the Moremi Game Reserve, which makes up a large portion of the eastern side of the Okavango Delta. It is the only officially protected area of the Delta and has been named the best game reserve in Africa. With the reintroduction of both white and black rhino, Moremi is also a Big 5 destination. Birders will be kept busy looking for the more than 400 species that make up the birding list here.

Your accommodation will be basic – no air conditioning, 24-hour electricity, spas or swimming pools – but comfortable. The tents have proper beds and bucket showers filled with water warmed on the fireplace. This ‘back to basics’ approach allows you to tear down the barriers between you and nature, making you appreciate the wilderness even more.

One of the joys of mobile safaris is that timetables are often more flexible – ask your private guide about specific activities and chat about when you would like to do them. Game viewing is, of course, best at dawn and dusk when it is coolest and the animals are most active.

Days 4-7: The gentle murmur of the Khwai

Up arrow

Your next camping destination is a tented site on the Khwai River. Like at Moremi, your accommodation will be designed to leave as light a footprint as possible while still allowing you to be comfortable.

The river is a source of exciting adventures like sunset cruises and mokoro rides in the shallows of the Delta (the polers will beat their sticks against the sides of the kayak to warn off nearby hippos). Once again, lace up your boots for guided nature walks, enjoy chats far into the inky night around the fire and be on the look out for the big cats that call the Khwai their home. Whether it is a twittering chorus of migratory birds at dawn or the gentle calling of mating frogs in the evening, the soothing sounds of the bush will imprint themselves on your mind.

After seven days, it is time to leave the world of camp fires, bucket showers and nature walks behind. You will be driven to Khwai Airport for the short flight back to Maun: once again, you can be dazzled as the Delta unfolds beneath, from horizon to horizon, as far as the eye can see.
