You will enjoy two of South Africa's best holiday destinations on this 8-day journey. It is an itinerary with plenty of opportunities for action and adventure, and makes for a great family getaway.

Begin your getaway with five days in Cape Town at the Table Bay Hotel, which has views of iconic Table Mountain and an eviable position in the world-famous V&A Waterfront, a popular hub for entertainment, dining and, of course, shopping.

Spend your time in the Mother City by visiting the rolling Cape Winelands, seeing Cape Point, making the acquaintance of endangered African penguins and strolling through the incredible Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens. In addition, this is the city with the best restaurants, bars, coffee shops and breweries on the continent so you can wine and dine to your heart's content.

You then head to South Africa's premier holiday resort, Sun City. Located next door to Pilanesberg National Park, there are plenty of Big 5 safari opportunities and all the facilities of Sun City itself, like two championship golf courses, the Valley of the Waves water park, plenty of children's activities and fun Segway tours.

This journey shows you two very different but equally memorable sides of South Africa and is ideal for first-timers, self-drivers or those with young children.

Day 1-5: Make your way through the Mother City

V&A Waterfront, Cape Town, South Africa
Detailed breakdown

Day 1-5: Make your way through the Mother City | 4 Nights

Up arrow
V&A Waterfront, Cape Town, South Africa

On arrival in Cape Town, your personal driver and car will be waiting to take you to The Table Bay Hotel, situated at the heart of the city's most popular and welcoming destination, the V&A Waterfront. The Table Bay has extensive dining areas and direct access to the V&A Waterfront, meaning cinemas, boutiques, galleries, harbour tours and museums are right on your doorstep.

You will have probably seen Table Mountain – one of the world’s Seven Wonders of Nature – from the air as you were coming in to land but if not, then the drive to the city will highlight one of its biggest drawcards. You have five days to explore this beautiful city, and having your own car or hiring a driver means doing it at your own pace. Save a clear day for a trip to the top of Table Mountain - by cable car or on foot - and spend a lazy day on the fashionable city beaches of Camps Bay or Clifton if you are visiting in summer (from about October to April).

The beautiful Cape Peninsula was made for exploring and you could easily spend a day driving around it, taking in Cape Point, the penguins of Boulders Beach, scenic Chapman’s Peak Drive, and quaint fishing villages like Kalk Bay and Hout Bay.

Leave some time to shop for mementos at the V&A Waterfront’s Watershed market, which is packed with high quality goods from all over Southern Africa, and pay a visit to the undercover Two Oceans Aquarium - a real treat for both young and old.

Spend another day uncovering the beautiful Cape Winelands, stopping along the way for excellent wine, chocolate, charcuterie and cheese tastings, cellar tours and a superb lunch at a historic wine estate.

Days 5-8: Set off for Sun City | 3 Nights

Sun City, South Africa

After a fun-filled five days in Cape Town, you will be driven back to the international airport by your private driver for the flight to OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. A road transfer will deliver you to The Palace of the Lost City, Sun City’s most lavish and upscale hotel. Conceived as the fairy-tale ruins of a mythical African civilization, The Palace has tumbling waterfalls, plenty of sculptures, intricate mosaics and sweeping staircases.

Sun City has an exhaustive list of activities, sports and adventures to choose from. Top of the list is a visit to the extraordinary man-made beach and water park at the Valley of the Waves, which recreates a tropical paradise in the middle of the bush, complete with swaying palm trees and a wave pool that mimics the tides.

There is also a wide range of water-based activities on the nearby lake – such as cruises and pedalos - and you can play a round of golf on one of the two Gary Player-designed championship golf courses (look out for the crocodiles that live near one of the holes – the ultimate ‘hazard’!).

Children will love the farmyard, Segway tours, the arcade and outdoor play areas. Grown-ups can escape to the Royal Baths, a large swimming pool that is for adults only, to enjoy a cocktail or two and catch up on your novel reading or sunbathing.

The next-door Pilanesberg National Park provides the setting for game drives and hot-air balloon safaris, and since the reserve sits in a malaria-free region - and is home to the Big 5 - you can enjoy great game viewing in a safe, child-friendly environment.

On your final morning, a private driver will collect you from the opulent lobby of The Palace to whisk you back to OR Tambo International, from where you can catch your flight home.
