One of the best ways to explore the wonders of Tanzania is with your own private 4x4 and a dedicated guide. Staying over at some of the country’s loveliest hotels, you will be able to set your own pace on game drives, lingering at a warthog and her newborn rooting around in the undergrowth or taking the time to track a far-off herd of long-necked gerenuks.

Begin this 8-day tour with a night at the plush Mount Meru Hotel in Arusha, a convenient stayover at the gateway to the northern safari circuit. The Plantation Lodge is your next stop, offering country-style accommodation in beautiful flower-filled gardens overlooking fragrant coffee plantations. While staying here, enjoy a game drive in Lake Manyara National Park, which is renowned for its tree-climbing leopards and lions as well as an impressive variety of big game. You are then chauffeured in your private 4x4 to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area where the mineral-rich floor of the world’s largest inactive volcanic caldera – the Ngorongoro Crater – is home to dense populations of mammals and is arguably the world’s premium Big 5 location.

Your final stop is Serengeti Serena Lodge within the Serengeti National Park. Home to the Great Migration – from May until October – this park is synonymous with the untamed wilds of Africa.

Day 1: Touch down in Arusha

Arusha, Tanzania
Detailed breakdown

Day 1: Touch down in Arusha | 1 Night

Up arrow
Arusha, Tanzania

Etched against the fertile slopes of beautiful Mount Meru in the city of Arusha – Tanzania’s gateway to the northern safari circuit – the Mount Meru Hotel is set in six hectares of lush landscaped gardens adjacent to a golf course. The hotel’s sophisticated and contemporary design cleverly uses light and space, from the grand lobby adorned with modern sculptures to the chic rooms furnished with all the modern conveniences. Put your feet up and enjoy a drink around the rim-flow swimming pool or pamper yourself at the spa or salon. The hotel grounds are a pleasure to explore around sunset before you sit down to dinner at your choice of four premier restaurants with an extensive selection of wines available.

Day 2: Sett off to Karatu | 3 Nights

Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

Enjoy a buffet breakfast in the stately hotel before being driven to The Plantation Lodge near the town of Karatu, where you arrive in time for a delightful alfresco lunch on the terrace. Surrounded by beautiful gardens and aromatic coffee plantations, this owner-run retreat is an idyllic stayover halfway between the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Lake Manyara National Park. Relax in the garden under the shade of a eucalyptus tree with a cup of home-grown coffee or fall into temptation and take a dip in the inviting swimming pool overlooking the gorgeous valley.

Day 3: Delve into Lake Manyara

Up arrow

After a sumptuous breakfast in the lodge’s manicured garden, you are driven to Lake Manyara National Park where you enjoy a guided game drive through this lush wilderness area. Most noted for its massive flamingo population, this avian-rich park is also inhabited by an incredible diversity of birds, including the long-crested eagle and grey-headed kingfisher. This Big 5 reserve – renowned for its tree-climbing leopards and lions – also boasts an impressive variety of big game and an unusual breed of giraffe so dark in coloration they appear to be black from a distance. Large herds of elephant and buffalo also reside here, and the forested areas are home to tree-swinging blue monkeys and antelope such as bushbuck.

Before your afternoon game drive return to the lodge and relax on the outdoor terrace where you are afforded marvellous views of the valley and dense coffee plantations. Over lunch, you are kept company by dik diks which walk nonchalantly through the eucalyptus-shaded garden.

Day 4: Marvel at the Ngorongoro Crater

Up arrow

After breakfast, you are driven through the scenic Ngorongoro Conservation Area to the world's largest inactive volcanic caldera – the Ngorongoro Crater. Home to more than 25 000 large mammals, its mineral-rich floor is arguably the world’s premium Big 5 location. Its 600-metre high walls, which are covered in lush vegetation, provide excellent protection for these animals while the nutritious grasslands are favoured by large herds of zebra, wildebeest and buffalo. Africa’s highest concentration of lions is found here along with endangered black rhino and some of the largest tusker elephants in the world.

Days 5-7: The serenity of the Serengeti | 3 Nights

Up arrow
Serengeti, Tanzania

After breakfast, it is off to the Serengeti National Park and Serengeti Serena Lodge in time for lunch overlooking the wildlife-rich plains. Set high on the saddle of a tree-clad ridge, this stunning lodge combines traditional African architecture with innovative design and immense comfort. Your elegant suite is an African-inspired, domed chalet shaded by groves of mature acacia trees and blends seamlessly into the untamed landscape.

Enjoy fascinating 4x4 morning and afternoon game drives on the plains with the chance to spot all members of the Big 5 and - if visiting during the Great Migration between May and October – thousands of wildebeest and zebra traversing this acacia-dotted landscape in search of greener pastures. For a completely different take on nature’s greatest spectacle, experience this mass exodus from a hot-air balloon where you will be able to take in this breathtaking landscape from high above.

Situated close to the 2-million-year-old Palaeolithic site of Ol Duvai, the lodge’s African heritage decorative theme is best illustrated by the lavish Makonde carvings which adorn the rooms and open-air dining room. Let hours drift by as you contemplate the grand expanse of the Serengeti plains from the comfort of your suite’s furnished private balcony. Indulge your senses with a full-body massage from one of the lodge’s beauty therapists in a serene bush setting. Wallow in the infinity pool which juts right out over the plains and soak up the evening entertainment of Swahili dance performances and singing in the bar area before dinner in the two-tiered dining room.
