  • Great combination of Selous and Ruaha for classic big game viewing
  • Wild and remote settings, exclusive camps and romantic ambience
  • Especially good for elephants, buffalo, big cats and river life
  • Morning and afternoon game drives, guided walks and spot-lit evening drives
  • River cruises in season, with excellent birdwatching

Bringing together two of Tanzania’s best big-game destinations, this safari is ideal for travellers who have already experienced the more familiar side of East Africa and are looking for a different wildlife experience. This 8-day fly-in itinerary sees you dividing your time between Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park, both noted for their unspoilt landscapes, high biodiversity and abundance of wildlife. This is your chance to explore these two little-visited reserves in search of big game and predators with the comfort and convenience of great accommodation throughout.

The adventure opens in the Selous where you enjoy four nights at Siwandu, set next to a lake in the reserve. Game drives and walks with expert guides are the main activity and you can expect all sorts of pleasant diversions on your safari such as the possibility of a surprise alfresco breakfast on the morning drive and chilled sundowner drinks in the evenings. When water levels are high enough, you can sit back on a boat and explore the Rufiji River Delta.

You then fly to Ruaha National Park for three nights at Siwandu’s sister camp. Jongomero is a well-established and well-loved accommodation set deep in the southern part of Ruaha and far from other lodges. You enjoy a similar mix of safari activities and return to some of the most comfortable tented suites in the region. Beginning and ending in Dar es Salaam, this safari was designed for an easy beach holiday add-on. It is a short flight over to the beaches of Zanzibar, Mnemba or Pemba, making it an ideal beach-and-bush holiday for romantic travellers and honeymooners or even groups of friends.

Days 1-4: Into the Selous

Detailed breakdown

Days 1-4: Into the Selous | 4 Nights

Up arrow

The tour begins in Tanzania’s coastal city of Dar es Salaam where you take a scheduled flight to the Selous region to be met and transferred to Siwandu, where you check in for four nights. Set under trees and next to a lake, your spacious suite is made of timber and canvas with a thatched roof to allow for natural cooling. A fan turns over the large double bed and the insect-proof doors pull back to reveal a table and chairs with a view over the savannah. Comforts include battery recharging points, a tea-and-coffee station, filtered water and a solar-powered shower. You can look forward to a range of safari activities at Siwandu such as early morning and late afternoon game drives, guided bush walks with armed rangers, and boat trips on the Rufiji River Delta when water levels are high enough.

Days 5-7: Discover Ruaha | 3 Nights

Up arrow

A morning flight takes you to Ruaha National Park and Jongomero Camp in time for lunch. Set on the banks of the seasonal Jongomero Sand River, this classic tented camp has its suites elevated above the ground to give you wonderful views. Step inside onto polished hardwood floors and soft light of your suite and you find a spacious bedroom and separate bathroom. It makes a wonderfully comfortable base from which to explore Ruaha, heading out on early morning and late afternoon game drives in search of animals ranging from elephants and buffalo to wild dog and big cats. Why not take advantage of your time here and go on a full-day safari to cover the whole park?

Days 8: The Journey Ends

Dar es Salaam

There should be time for a last morning game drive in Ruaha before you sit back on a transfer to the airstrip and a flight back to Dar es Salaam, a journey of about 90 minutes. Once you have arrived at the city’s domestic airport, you will be met and transferred to Dar es Salaam’s international airport for your onward connections and the end of this safari.
