Overview

The Selous and the Serengeti are Tanzania’s flagship wildlife destinations that are almost opposites. The Selous is one of the biggest reserves in the world and at least three times the size of the Serengeti but gets a fraction of its visitors. The Serengeti, of course, is home to the first half of the annual Wildebeest Migration, a sight seen nowhere else in the country that attracts safari lovers from across the world. Fortunately, this tour lets you have it all: the remoteness of Selous, the action of the Serengeti and – the cherry on the top – accommodation in two of Tanzania’s best private safari villas.

The benefits of exclusive-use villas and lodges are manifold. You and your family or friends are guaranteed privacy, and can truly kick of your shoes and makes yourselves at home. Even better, you decide when you would like your meals, how long game drives should be and what activities you would like to undertake – choose from boating, guided walks or cultural visits, all under the watchful eye of your personal host and game ranger.

Tanzanian safaris often kick off in the coffee-growing town of Arusha and yours is no different. After a refreshing night at Rivertrees Country Inn, you will fly to Mkombe’s House, Lamai in the Serengeti and then head to Kiba Point in the Selous, making for a sensational nine days in Africa.

Detailed breakdown

Day 1-2: Welcome to Tanzania | 1 Night

Up arrow
Arusha, Tanzania

After arriving at Arusha Airport, a transfer waits to take you for a night of rest and relaxation at Rivertrees Country Inn, located in the foothills of Mount Meru. As you leave the town of Arusha behind, you will pass by coffee plantations and small villages while on a clear day you might even be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest free-standing mountain in the world.

At Rivertrees you are welcomed by 10 acres of montane forests, lush lawns and charming cottage suites. Spend the night enjoying family recipes made with garden-fresh ingredients, a cosy fireplace on chillier nights and the comfort of a plush 4-poster bed.

Days 2-5: Safari in the Serengeti | 3 Nights

Up arrow
Serengeti, Tanzania

Today you will travel to Tanzania's flagship wilderness region - the legendary Serengeti National Park. From Arusha Airport you will fly to Kogatende Airstrip and then transfer to your home for the next three nights, Mkombe's House, Lamai - an ultra-luxurious, exclusive-use villa where you and your family can enjoy a truly bespoke safari experience. A dedicated game ranger and use of a 4x4 vehicle mean that you can design your own schedule, while a private chef and service staff will ensure you are relaxed and catered to at all times.

After settling in, enjoy lunch and freshen up for the afternoon's adventure. Driving out onto the Serengeti's open plains, your guide interprets the signs of the wild and opens your eyes to the African wilderness. Game viewing is excellent year-round and the arrival of the Wildebeest Migration is one of nature's greatest spectacles: sit back as the high drama unfolds with huge herds rolling across the savannah, the bulls jostling for supremacy, apex predators stalking them night and day, and crocodiles waiting patiently in the rivers. Activities over the next three days include game drives, guided walks (12 years and older), picnics, sundowners in the wilderness, or simply enjoying the breathtaking views from your villa.

Mkombe's House, Lamai has many sunny decks as well as a plunge pool and large swimming to make the most of the views across the Mara River Valley and Lamai Wedge. Its perch on Kogakuria Kopje give you superb vistas to the Mara River, which is a crossing point during the Wildebeest Migration from about mid-year. It comfortably sleeps four adults and six children, and it is a fitting tribute to Mkombe Mniko, a legendary guide to introduced many to the wonders of his beloved Tanzania.

Days 5-9: Travel to Selous in the wild south | 4 Nights

Up arrow
Selous, Tanzania

From the Serengeti, you will fly to Kiba Airstrip just outside Selous Game Reserve. The largest reserve in Africa, Selous is at least three times the size of the Serengeti, and despite its great populations of savannah game, it remains relatively unknown and unexplored. In this wild and remote region, you can look forward to seeing large elephant and buffalo herds and very healthy populations of hippo, giraffe and sable antelope. It is also home to the Big 5 as well as predators like wild dog, cheetah and spotted hyena.

Your base for the following four nights is Kiba Point, set alongside the deep channels of the Rufiji River. Like your safari villa in the Serengeti, Kiba Point is an exclusive-use lodge with all the comforts of home plus the added benefit of a dedicated team and a location in one of Africa's pristine and undiscovered reserves. The safari villa is set back on the hillside overlooking the river and each of the four luxurious suites has its own private deck and plunge pool.

Rufiji River is the lifeblood of the Selous, creating a series of interconnected lakes and palm-fringed channels through the park. Boating safaris allow you to witness the hive of activity that surrounds the river and on guided walks, you are able to quietly approach wildlife at the river shore on foot. All safari activities - including game drives, picnics at Stigler's Gorge and swimming in nearby streams - are totally exclusive, so you can have spontaneous or personally-scheduled adventures with just you and your loved ones, guided by a dedicated game ranger. Look out for swooping pelicans, nimble crowned eagles and shrieking rock hyraxes.

Departing from Selous on your final day, you will fly to Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam where you are able to proceed with further travel arrangements.
