Overview of Babylonstoren

One of the oldest Cape Dutch farms, Babylonstoren offers a simplistic, yet elegant home where you can experience a slice of 18th century farm life without compromising on luxuries. Ideal for families as well as romantics, Babylonstoren lies in the heart of the Cape Winelands and is ideally located to explore the surrounding farms. Explore the 200 acres of working farmland, perhaps visiting the extensive fruit and vegetable garden.

Walk or jog up the Babylonstoren Koppie for fantastic views and a closer look at the indigenous fynbos vegetation, cycle through the vineyards, or paddle on the farm dam in a canoe. Babylonstoren is ideally located to explore the wine farms of Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek. End these perfect days off with a sundowner at the picnic spot before visiting the Babel restaurant for a top-class meal, fresh from the garden.

    Two Bedroom Cottage

The Fynbos Cottages (fynbos is a specific type of heather found within the Cape Floral Kingdom) are set further from the main buildings at Babylonstoren to ensure privacy for more adventurous guests who love nature. Designed in the Cape Dutch vernacular, they adjoin the lush orchards and verdant vineyards of the working farm, and overlook the farm dam. Birders should be on the look out for up to 78 different species, including elusive African fish eagles, a species rarely heard around Cape Town.

There are four 2-bedroom cottages and two 1-bedroom units, making them ideal for small families or couples. A larger group may want to reserve all of the cottages for a special holiday or celebration.

The Fynbos Cottages have an exclusive-use leisure area known as The Pool Room. Fynbos guests have free rein in the lounge, bar and plunge pool, which is surrounded by natural water pools. Here you can enjoy time under the South African sun while savouring tea brewed from freshly picked herbs or a glass of special Babylonstoren wine among other delicious drinks.

The exteriors of the suites are white-washed and built in the traditional Cape Dutch style, with gables and thatched roofs while the interiors are clean, contemporary, and spacious. In the summer months, the predominantly white decor and furnishings allow for a cool atmosphere, while during winter, the rooms are heated by the open hearths.

High ceilings and hand-picked furniture give the rooms a contemporary feel while maintaining the historical flair.

The exclusive private suites feature beautiful glass-fronted kitchens and exquisitely furnished interiors and are ideal for the more discerning traveller. The restored Manor House dates back to 1777, and is available for exclusive use.

      General Facilities

Our jaws dropped when we arrived and roamed around the extensive beautiful gardens with a gin tonic in hand while we waited for our rooms. It felt like the garden of Eden. Absolute paradise! My mum honestly had tears in her eyes as we were shown our room. The room was so delightfully furnished – all in African/Dutch cottage chique theme – flowers, fruit and wine bottles for our consumption everywhere! Such attention to detail by even popping in a hot water bottle inside the bed at turn down service! Just fantastic service.

The activities included on the farm where also extreemly interesting (the garden walk in particular) and we really felt that the staff were not rushed and took extra time to spend with us to answer questions etc… We asked if one evening we could have a sunset picnic and like magic they arranged it all for us and even set it up. Talk about royal treatment! It was definitely a highlight. Delicious food and wine with a stunning setting in nature. Exquisite grounds, infrastructure and produce!

Babylstoren is out-of-control beautiful – we sacrificed wine tasting elsewhere just to hang out there (could have stayed a third night easily – it truly made us slow down and take it all in). The food was crazy as it was mostly grown there.

I have not stayed anywhere like Babylonstoren before. The rooms, food and attention to detail was incredible – everything had been thought of, but in a very understated way.

Babylonstoren was a real highlight for us. Elke thought it was akin to the Alhambra in Spain (but better maintained). It is such a unique place with the vineyard, orchards and animals. As we wandered around I had a real sense of the generations of work and commitment to get it to its current state. The accommodation was so comfortable and the staff were a complete delight. And I had a transportational massage! All in all, an unforgettable place. Thanks so much for everything. We had a great time.

What can I say, divine in every sense of the word and we were sad to not have 3 nights here. We were seriously impressed! If we ever come back to SA this is the first stop on our list and I have not stopped telling people about it.

Babylonstoren – well, what can I say… we didn’t want to leave. It was perfect. I really can’t think of anything they could have done better. Food delicious, wine too, very cosy cottage with everything you might need. Comfiest hotel beds ever. The staff were attentive but not overbearing. The gardens are beautiful. There has obviously been a great deal of attention paid to detail there, and it shows. We definitely want to go back. A wonderfully relaxing place.
