Our Top Picks for March

Whether you are planning to witness the Great Wildebeest Migration in East Africa, experience a Big 5 safari in the Kruger National Park or spend your honeymoon in the Seychelles, timing is important. Our guidelines are based on our expert, on-the-ground knowledge of Africa’s travel seasons.

KwaZulu-Natal Midlands - South Africa

Season | High Summer | Average Temperature for March | 27 Celcius | 81 Farenheit

What

Everything from horse-riding through bucolic pastures and visiting the Anglo-Boer War battlefields to sampling delicious country cuisine and hiking among the incredible Drakensberg (‘Dragon’s Mountain’).

Why

The humidity of summer is lifting, leaving balmy days and temperate evenings. Self-drivers will enjoy discovering a part of South Africa that only locals know.

When to book

Much depends on when the Easter and local school holidays fall. kwaZulu-Natal is a popular destination for South Africans at these times and so availability will be reduced. If Easter is in April, you needn’t plan so far in advance.

Southern Serengeti - Tanzania

Season | High Summer | Average Temperature for March | 23 Celcius | 73 Farenheit

What

Seeing the mega herds of the Wildebeest Migration begin to move northwards.

Why

By March, the thousands of babies that ‘dropped’ in January and February are strong enough to join their parents on their trans-savannah trek. It is also Green Season in Tanzania, meaning low rates and low visitor numbers but high opportunities for photographers.

When to book

If you find you can travel at the last minute, enquire about a Serengeti safari as availability is generally good. Like the Sabi Sands though, the park may fill up with self-drivers and local families if the Easter holidays fall in March rather than April.

Sabi Sands Game Reserve - South Africa

Season | High Summer | Average Temperature for March | 25 Celcius | 76 Farenheit

What

Excellent leopard and rhino sightings in Big 5 country, topped off by incredible accommodation and service as well as night drives and nature walks.

Why

The Sabi Sands shares an unfenced border with Kruger, making it one of the most exciting game destinations in the country. By March, summer’s afternoon thunderstorms are largely over but the vegetation remains lush and verdant – an excellent backdrop for photographers.

When to book

The Sabi Sands is one of the most sought-after year-round game-viewing destinations in Africa. Make it your New Year’s resolution to book your accommodation on 2 January!
