Overview of Little Kwara Camp

Little Kwara Camp is situated on a small island in the permanent waters of the Kwara Concession in the world-famous Okavango Delta. The secluded 5-tent camp is hidden among grand old trees and each tent has a private veranda that looks out over the water, home to abundant animal and bird life. Embark on morning, afternoon and evening game drives with experienced guides or enjoy magnificent views from a double-decked powerboat.

Guests can also enjoy early morning trips in a mokoro – a traditional dug-out canoe punted along by a boatman using a long pole. Little Kwara Camp is surrounded by water all year round, ensuring great game viewing regardless of season, while other highlights include bird watching and nature walks accompanied by expert guides.

First we were surprised to be in an absolutely dry environment, no water in sight. Room was a rather big Treehouse, very good food, very charming atmosphere and tremendous game drives plus sensational sightings including baboons trying to open the fridge in the camp.

I had been in Little Kwara before, and chose it. As per usual, the welcome was great, and the camp seemed as I had left it 4 years before. The gift store was better stocked this time, and everyone was a little more watchful as baboons had recently been bothering staff and running off with things.

The room was the same, but we were the last tent, so had the longer walk. That was quite OK. The rooms are comfortable, well laid out, nice bathroom fixtures, a rustic but great outdoor shower, a veranda with just an OK view. Four years ago, the lagoon was closer, but part of it was dry at present.

Our guide was Dix, and KP was the tracker. They were very knowledgeable, loved the work they were doing, became as excited as we were when things went well. These guys were great! They were San and seemed to have a connection to this world. As Little Kwara is in a private reserve, they were able to get close, to track, to show us this world. What worked as well, was that between Kwara and Little Kwara, there were 5 vehicles roaming the reserve, and all of them were spotting interesting scenes. And we all got to see, but not all at once. They ensured no more than 3 were in an area.

Game drives were the best, as this was a private reserve. The floods had NOT come down as much as when I was here 4 years before, but there were lots of water holes, and lots of animals. One morning was a) hyenas with a wild dog kill; b) tracking a bachelor lion, who met his brother, and the two went on; c) a leopard mom and cub, who walked through the grass to a tree island with cub jumping up and down; and d) cheetah mom and two older cubs, who prowled and was on the chase! We also saw a male cheetah on two different days, on the savannah checking out prey. We stayed with him one day, as he searched for prey, made his move, and then was on the chase. Unfortunately, we couldn’t confirm a kill. We had lots of adventures!

Little Kwara was very well run. The food was good, varied, and even a vegan could be happy. The staff were friendly, pleasant. We were impressed that 2 of the staff ‘baby sat’ the 8 and 5 year olds who were here with family. And they did it, because they wanted to do it. We spent a bit of money at the gift shop, which would be opened at your pleasure and had a variety of gifts. The morning ‘break’ and the evening sundowners were great. A boat trip was very pleasant. We joined a bachelor bull in the water, who didn’t seem to mind us, but we stayed away. We had buffet brunch and dinner every day at a long table with guests and guides. Breakfast at 6am was at a fire. Enjoyed this ‘community’ immensely. We stayed in Little Kwara for 3 nights. I could have done one more, happily, but glad that we had 3! There is no Wi-Fi, no TV, a blessing!

This place was fantastic! The setting and atmosphere of the tented lodge was casual and ‘bush camp’, but extremely comfortable. The food was plentiful, well cooked and flavoursome especially considering the remote location of this camp. Lizzie and her staff were extremely helpful, friendly and well organised, and the shared dining arrangement added to the sense of community at the intimate camp. But what really stood out for us was the game viewing. The knowledge and passion of our guide, Dutch was infectious and the ability to go off-track in search of the plentiful game enhanced the experience and added to the adventure.
