Overview of Chole Mjini

Tanzania, Mafia Island

Chole Mjini is situated on Chole Island, which is just a short dhow ride from Mafia Island and lies at the heart of the Mafia Island Marine Park in Tanzania. Hidden in the tree canopy, the wooden chalets offer panoramic views and complete privacy.

Chole island is only one kilometre in length and here you can visit fascinating ancient ruins, Popo Park, as well as the island’s traditional village where you can meet the locals and learn about a culture steeped in history.

Explore the Rufiji River delta, go snorkelling, diving, bird-watching, take a boat ride to Jambi Forest, go sailing or just spend your days sunbathing at the sandbar that appears every day for about 6 hours around low tide.

At Chole Mjini, tailormade excursions can be arranged to cater for your individual requests and these can include an overnight stay on a picturesque beach followed by a private whale shark trip the following day, or a 4-day island-hopping trip to Kilwa to see the magnificent ruins of the ancient Shirazi Sultanate.

The Chole Mjini Conservation and Development Company Ltd was set up in 1993 to create a lodge on Chole that not only provides comfortable and stylish accommodation in a unique natural environment but also helps to improve the living conditions and future prospects of the people of Chole.

Treehouse Moja

At Chole Mjini, each treehouse is uniquely crafted and carefully positioned to ensure privacy and blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. Open to the elements, these elevated sanctuaries feature a throne-like king-size bed as the centerpiece, accessible via sandy paths winding through lush vegetation. Every treehouse offers stunning sea views, with some close enough to let the gentle sounds of the tide whisper through the mangrove roots at night. Many treehouses have a second level to accommodate children, enhancing their family-friendly charm.

Treehouse Moja, for instance, is nestled within the canopy of an ancient deciduous Baobab tree and is a favorite for its expansive deck overlooking the sea and its unique shower tucked away in a bamboo thicket, offering a true escape into nature.

Other Room Types:

Treehouse Nne is a favorite for its unique design and breathtaking views. Featuring an en-suite setup, it includes an upstairs “tea house,” an elevated room offering 360-degree views and spectacular sunsets. Nne boasts a private sundeck with a plunge pool overlooking the mangroves and bay, where you can enjoy stargazing and showering under the open sky. With all amenities available in the treehouse, you can fully immerse yourself in this elevated retreat without needing to return to the ground.

Treehouse Mbili offers a spacious retreat across two levels, comfortably accommodating up to three guests. This unique treehouse features two double beds, each on its own generous floor, all sheltered under a single thatched roof. The upstairs level provides particularly breathtaking views, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the stunning natural surroundings.

Treehouse Tatu, known as “the house on the rocks,” is accessed through a tunnel of foliage and offers an enchanting connection to the ocean. With close-up and distant sea views, you can watch crabs, mudskippers, and even schools of fish just meters below. Tatu is uniquely constructed on two separate levels under two distinct roofs, resembling two houses linked by a staircase. The main house rests on rocks beneath a Tamarind tree, while the second house is nestled over the beach among the mangroves.

Treehouse Saba is spacious and fully en-suite, comfortably accommodating two adults and two children. It features a tea house with stunning sunset views and refreshing breezes. Enjoy the large sundeck with a private plunge pool, airy bathroom, and beach views extending to Mafia Island.

General Facilities

The spacious communal area of Chole Mjini is situated in the lush garden, amongst the old ruins of the island. Covered by thatch with open sides the lounge area is scattered with comfortable cushions and provides books and board games to while away the hours. Climb the stairs to the wide viewing deck with its gorgeous views over the island.

There is no electricity at Chole Mjini so the evenings are lit by flickering lanterns and there are no modern appliances to distract you from the serious business of getting away from it all.

Dining

The delectable cuisine at Chole Mjini more than often includes freshly caught seafood and locally grown produce, which is cooked in traditional Swahili style.

Meals are generally served in the thatched dining room, however, you’ll also get the chance to experience true Tanzania as you dine at a table set up in an old ruin entangled in the roots of a huge fig tree, by the soft light of hurricane lanterns or on your private deck.
