Overview

Set on the bank of the Luangwa River in a grove of shady trees, Kaingo Camp is one of the few owner-run camps in South Luangwa National Park, making the atmosphere particularly intimate and friendly.

Also unusually, Kaingo Camp offers three wildlife activities per day, and in between game drives and guided walks you are able to take advantage of several photographic hides set up in various prolific locations. A sleep-out in the elephant hide is also on option not to be missed. Excellent cuisine, hospitable service and top-notch guiding in this wildlife-rich region guarantee you an extraordinary safari experience.

Perfect for wildlife enthusiasts of every calibre as well as families wanting a laid-back Zambian vacation, Kaingo delivers amazing big game encounters in one of Africa’s most pristine and wildest national parks.

Rooms

Chalet

There are six brick-and-thatch chalets at Kaingo, all of which have uninterrupted river views and their own private decks built over the river, where a light lunch is often served. The chalets are decorated in earthy tones, creams and bright African-print fabrics, and feature stone floors, stable doors and mesh windows to keep mosquitoes and other bugs out. The furniture is locally made and the comfortable beds are swathed in mosquito nets. A daybed, scattered with cushions, can be converted into a single bed at night. Each chalet has an en suite bathroom with a shower, flushing toilet and basin, with hot water available all day, while outside under shady trees is a secluded outdoor bathtub.

Facilities

Kaingo Camp’s lounge and dining area has a thatched roof and open sides with an airy and cool feel to it. At its heart is an amazing bar crafted from the huge trunk of an ancient leadwood tree. Sofas and chairs are arranged around a coffee table set with wildlife books and magazines, and to one side is a large wooden dining table, which is lit by lanterns at night. Just outside is the campfire area, which is a gathering point in the evenings and early mornings. There are plenty of charging points for your camera batteries, as well as a small safari shop.

Below the main area, built out over the river, is the lounge deck, a lovely spot with a number of comfortable chairs and sofas, several nature books, and a telescope for observing the birds and any animals along the riverbank.

Dining

Kaingo Camp has the benefit of its own fruit and vegetable garden in Mfuwe, which ensures that fresh, quality ingredients are delivered regularly. A delicious and imaginative menu is presented at mealtimes throughout the day, from early morning hot drinks and biscuits around the campfire before your game activity to a wonderful breakfast on your return. Lunch is served at midday, followed by a high tea before you set out for the afternoon’s adventure. You return in the evenings for a sumptuous 3-course dinner, often served below the stars.
