The Kariega Game Reserve comprises 10 000 hectares of pristine southern afrotemperate forest in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province. Malaria-free and a good way to top off a self-drive holiday along the scenic coastal Garden Route, Kariega has a range of accommodation, the most contemporary of which is Settlers Drift.
A modern tented camp that uses minimalist furnishings, monochrome colours and the textures of nature – think rock, stone, timber and metal – Settlers Drift consists of only nine very spacious suites, each with large living areas, outdoors showers and private decks. Not suitable for children under 10, Settlers Drift is, however, ideal for honeymooners who want a luxurious Big 5 experience. Discreet spa treatments are offered in a beautiful open-air setting.
Those keen on game viewing will not be disappointed: Kariega is home to more than 25 species of game (including giraffe) and nearly 300 types of birds, like fish, martial and crowned eagles. In addition to traditional morning and afternoon game drives, there are cruises and canoeing on the Bushman’s and Kariega Rivers, and guided bush walks. The dramatic landscape encompasses five different ecosystems, making for diverse scenery and exciting photographs when out on a drive.
