The Kariega Game Reserve comprises 10 000 hectares of pristine southern afrotemperate forest in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province. Malaria-free and a good way to top off a self-drive holiday along the scenic coastal Garden Route, Kariega has a range of accommodation, the most contemporary of which is Settlers Drift.

A modern tented camp that uses minimalist furnishings, monochrome colours and the textures of nature – think rock, stone, timber and metal – Settlers Drift consists of only nine very spacious suites, each with large living areas, outdoors showers and private decks. Not suitable for children under 10, Settlers Drift is, however, ideal for honeymooners who want a luxurious Big 5 experience. Discreet spa treatments are offered in a beautiful open-air setting.

Those keen on game viewing will not be disappointed: Kariega is home to more than 25 species of game (including giraffe) and nearly 300 types of birds, like fish, martial and crowned eagles. In addition to traditional morning and afternoon game drives, there are cruises and canoeing on the Bushman’s and Kariega Rivers, and guided bush walks. The dramatic landscape encompasses five different ecosystems, making for diverse scenery and exciting photographs when out on a drive.

  • Excellent malaria-free Big 5 game viewing
  • Canoeing, boating and guided bush walks

Luxury Tent

There are nine spacious tented suites at Settlers Drift, each with an en suite bathroom and a fireplace. All open up onto sunny balconies with tranquil views over the verdant Eastern Cape landscape. Bathrooms have double vanities, tubs with views and outdoor showers. Décor is modern and minimalist, with crisp white linen covering the king-sized beds and ceiling fans in place for the summer months.

Children aged 11 to 16 are permitted to share their parents’ suite. Wi-Fi is available in the rooms.

Settlers Drift has an outdoor infinity-edge swimming pool for sunny days and a peaceful sala where spa treatments are undertaken. There is satellite television in the main lodge area.

A safari shop caters for those ‘I forgot to pack…’ and ‘need to buy a gift for…’ purchases, and there is a private laundry facility.

There is a full bar with sweeping views of the valley below, a well-stocked wine cellar and a private dining table near the cellar that is warmed by a roaring wood-burning fireplace. You can choose to dine at separate tables in the airy and light dining room, or outdoors at the pool area.
