Overview of Saseka Tented Camp

South Africa, Thornybush Game Reserve

One of Thornybush's most luxurious safari camps, Saseka Tented Camp has been carefully set on the banks of a seasonal river in one of South Africa's best private game reserves, a privately-run conservation area adjacent to the Kruger National Park. It is classic Big 5 country, and Saseka's design means it is suitable for couples on a romantic journey.

It is a small and intimate camp: there are only nine tented suites at Saseka, plus a large and luxurious safari villa, Little Saseka – perfect for couples or families looking for superior privacy. Built to exacting standards and with an eye for detail, each suite overlooks the seasonal Monwana River, which is sometimes sandy and dry, sometimes flowing, but always attractive to wildlife. You can sit on your deck and watch animals and birds between rewarding twice-daily game drives. You will sit back on a specially-designed vehicle in the safe hands of a driver/guide and a sharp-eyed tracker, on the lookout for the Big 5 – lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo – as well as the other major players of the bush, from hippos to honey badgers.

Back at camp you have designer accommodation to look forward to, complete with air conditioning for perfect temperature control. Slide back the glass doors at the front of your suite and you will find a plunge pool on your private deck, the ideal spot to relax and watch a male weaver bird build an intricate nest or listen to the gentle song of a Burchell's coucal…

 

Make a Positive Impact Through Travel

Thornybush Community is a non-profit organisation with the objective of nurturing and uplifting the surrounding local communities adjacent to its protected areas. Located on the western border of the Greater Kruger National Park and on the boundary of the Northern Sabi Sand Nature Reserve, Thornybush Community initially focused its work on two villages, Uthla and a smaller neighbouring community, Dixie. In 2019, a new geographical area was identified in Acornhoek, and this has allowed for some exciting new initiatives and partnerships. Over the years, the focus areas have expanded, and Thornybush Community has become a contributor to the NPO sector and supports various community initiatives.

Tent

Each of the tented suites at Saseka look out over the seasonal Monwana River and has been created to deliver luxury under canvas. You enjoy the comforts of air conditioning and the conveniences of Wi-Fi, a mini-bar, hair-dryer and telephone as well as your own bathroom with bathtub and shower. A large net-swathed bed takes centre stage in the room and boasts broad views of the wilderness outside; open the sliding glass doors and you walk out onto your private viewing deck with sun loungers and a plunge pool.

Little Saseka

Little Saseka offers an exclusive-use retreat within the stunning grounds of Saseka Tented Camp, overlooking the seasonal Monwana Riverbed. Ideal for families or small groups, it provides complete privacy with a main villa featuring a tented suite, sunken outdoor lounge, fire pit, and indoor lounge.

General Facilities

Beautifully built from stone and timber, Saseka sits comfortably and unobtrusively on the banks of the seasonal Monwana River. The main lodge has a grandstand view of the riverbed, its covered indoor area flowing onto broad wooden decks with easy chairs. There is plenty of space to relax and socialise at the main camp – the two large fireplaces are popular in winter, which coincides with peak safari season.

A boutique gift shop is available if you would like a souvenir of your stay. Wi-Fi is available at Saseka, as is a laundry service.

You will enjoy three meals a day at Saseka, served at the main lodge either on the main deck or perhaps on the upper deck. If you feel like something a bit more private, then your host will be happy to arrange a table for two at your suite. Guests staying at the villa have a dedicated dining area for private meals.

All meals are prepared at the lodge and a team of chefs ensures all dietary requirements are catered for, with sufficient notice.

    Fantastic Leadwood Villa with lovely staff and superb food. Game viewing is excellent – wild dogs, lots of lions, elephants, buffalo, rhinos (dehorned but impressive), leopards, hippos, hyenas and for the first time honey badgers. The only negative is how busy Thornybush is even though some lodges are still not full or open. The resultant queuing system makes some sightings seem overmanaged.

    Saseka Tented Camp was a really pleasant surprise to me. I've always wanted a real ‘glamping' experience in Thornybush Game Reserve. As you walk into the reception area you see a beautiful open panoramic view of the dry river bed which you also overlook during lunch and dinner. The sound of running water from water features is really peaceful and everything seems to have bene designed around giving people their own space to come sit and relax between game drives. The walk to the tents is through these amazing pathways which creates this feeling that you're walking into the bush and are secluded in your tents. The tents themselves are amazing. They're filled with old-school safari furniture that has been repurposed with a modern twist.

    A truly wonderful tented camp experience. Very different from the norm and quite contemporary. Almost offers a beach feel in the middle of the bush. Great game viewing.

    The tents are enormous and offer an indoor and outdoor shower, a private plunge pool and a viewing deck – great for couples and honeymooners. A separate 2 tented unit is available for families offering a completely private safari experience.

    I love Saseka with is luxurious and uniquely decorated tented accommodation! Your private verandah has the most comfortable loungers, where you can relax with a book or look for animals in the dry riverbed – when you are not out on game drives. The outdoor shower is also amazing!

    Saseka is truly unique in its décor and gives you a feeling of being at a tented camp in East Africa. Set alongside the Monwana River which sweeps through the Thornybush Nature Reserve, the tents are exquisite and equipped with everything you need.
