Overview of Tarangire River Camp

Tanzania, Tarangire

Enjoy a classic safari at Tarangire River Camp. This luxurious tented camp, set in a 25 000ha concession overlooking the Tarangire River, is only 3.5km from the main entrance to Tarangire National Park which means you are able to go on fantastic game drives and bird watching trips in Tarangire as well as at nearby Lake Manyara. And since the camp is located on the outskirts of the park, you are also permitted to do activities that are not allowed in Tanzania’s northern parks such as guided walking safaris and night drives. Other activities include visits to local Maasai and Datoga villages.

Back at the camp, you’ll get some more game viewing from the comfort of the elevated wooden deck or you can choose to warm up beside the fire. The raised viewing deck, dining room and lounge all blend seamlessly with the outdoors, adding to your safari experience.

We saw a leopard up close on the rocks in Tarangire, and some cheetahs pretty close up here and there. Tarangire was my favorite for ambiance, but the food did not equal the quality of all the other camps and lodges. It still was fine, just not as wonderful as the others. We did prefer the bigger Land Rover.

For the Tanzania part, we couldn’t have wished for a better guide and he really knew his birds. He also spotted 2 leopards, one of which was well hidden. We got on well with our travel companions. We enjoyed all the lodges. Tarangire was a little bit of an anti-climax although we also enjoyed it. We did , however, spend the last day unnecessarily in Tanzania. The rest of our party flew out that day. We were upgraded and did enjoy the hotel and the SA manager.

Pleased to mention we had a very nice time. Only drawback was delay at the beginning of the trip as a co-traveller had lost her passport in Kenya and could not pass the border to Tanzania, causing us delay in the start at Arusha. Ranger transferred us from the Arusha hotel in the middle of town to a lodge outside town, with a more “safari look” than the Arusha hotel.
Apart from that, we had a very nice journey, with Ngorongoro and Tarangire as highlights, good accommodation and helpful staff at every lodge.
