Overview of Tau Pan Camp

Botswana’s vast and unspoilt Central Kalahari Game Reserve is one of the largest and least-visited conservation areas in the world – it’s also home to the beautiful Tau Pan Camp, overlooking a permanent waterhole and the seemingly endless Kalahari horizon, and providing the ideal base from which to gain a once-in-a-lifetime Kalahari experience.

A year-round destination, the best time to go to the Kalahari is between early December and April when the warm summer rains rejuvenate the region: many antelope species give birth, flocks of migrant birds arrive and the Kalahari predators – lion, cheetah, wild dog, brown hyena, jackal and leopard – are in their element. Explore the reserve on 4×4 game drives or on guided bush walks with the San Bushmen who will teach you the finer details of survival in this hugely rewarding environment.

Our first night was at Tau Pan, which is in the Central Kalahari. I picked the Central Kalahari as I wanted a different part of Botswana and had heard that there are meerkats there. There were not, but it was interesting to see a drier part of Botswana, and some different wildlife, eg oryx, springbok, and black-maned lions. Additionally, both Ginny and I had read the ‘Cry of the Safari’ and we wanted to visit Deception Valley.

The room was nicely furnished with a wide view of the plain and water hole – the latter a little hard to see. We were close enough to the common areas that the walk was not too far. The outdoor shower was good. We were told NOT to be on the veranda at night!

Mozilla was our guide. He was knowledgeable, helpful to a first-timer, and indefatigable. The trip to Deception Valley and return was really long. He kept his spirit up though, and walked us back to our tent after dinner even though he was tired. As it happened, there was not much to see in the tree island. He was an expert at spotting birds, beetles in bushes, butterflies, and found us some lions as well as two giraffe males having a ‘spat’. The latter was incredible!

The game drives were all good: lions, oryx, springbok, giraffe, bustards, lilac-breasted roller, ostrich, etc. This was a park so we were limited to roads, but were able to get as close as possible, particularly with the lions and giraffe.

In general, a well-run camp: food was good, accommodation fine, staff friendly and helpful, clothes washed and ready for us. And, one morning we were woken up by a lion’s roar! Dinner was communal — guests and guides. Excellent!

We were really happy with the Tau Pan and Little Kwara. And of those 2 camps Tau Pan and the Kalahari were awesome. Just a very peaceful place.

Tau Pan Camp in the Kalahari’s highlight was the walk with the Bushmen – learnt so much about how they live in the desert.
