Overview of Tortilis Camp

Sharing a border with Amboseli National Park and with its own private entrance into the park, Tortilis Camp is located in a hillside setting and shaded by the natural forest of Acacia tortilis thorn trees after which the camp is named. Designed in a manner that blends rustic style and modern amenities, this completely camp is renowned for its high standards of service and its superb views of the sunset over Mounts Kilimanjaro and Meru.

Tortilis Camp offers a wide range of activities, ranging from early morning and late afternoon game drives, to guided game walks outside the game park led by a Maasai expert. Support the local community by visiting a local village, and meet and interact with the students of Esiteti Primary School. Alternatively, you can laze around the pool with a cocktail and enjoy the sounds of the wild.

Once you have had your fill of relaxing activities like birding and sundowners, head to the Amboseli Elephant Research Centre – founded by Dr Cynthia Moss – to learn more about efforts to save these intelligent and sensitive pachyderms.

Dining

The food at Tortilis Camp is an integral part of the camp’s charm. Enjoy traditional northern Italian cuisine, based on recipes from the owner’s family cookbook, complemented by delicious salads and herbs grown in the camp’s own kitchen garden.

The day’s menu consists of breakfast and lunch buffets, and an a la carte dinner. Dishes include pizza, lasagne, spaghetti bolognaise, fresh perch, seared beef fillet and chocolate roulade. All water, including that used for ice, is filtered. Tortilis Camp issues guests with a reusable metal water bottle, thus stopping 200 000 plastic water bottles from being sent to landfill every year.

When you are out on the afternoon game drive, enjoy the ‘bitings’ (as snacks are known in Kenya) that have been freshly prepared by the chef.

Tortillis Camp works closely with the African Beekeepers’ Association and their resulting delicious honey is not only for sale in the safari shop but is also creatively incorporated into the menu.

Tortillis camp was great – we really enjoyed the private family house. The two bedrooms were secured well for mosquitos and they provided a pack & play with a mosquito net for my 5-month old! The food was very good. The guide was very knowledgable, helpful and everything we could have hoped for. At this time of year the game was not very plentiful but the landscape and Kilimanjaro particularly was overwhelming. We really wanted to see Kilimanjaro and this was a great backdrop. I wasn’t too keen on going on the Masai Village tour but that was a highlight! So glad we did it. Two nights was perfect, as you suggested.

Tortillis Camp – Could not fault in any way. Kilimanjaro was in full view for the 2 days, and had a wonderfull sundowner on a hill with a full 360 of the plains below.Elephants by the 100s

Yes, we are back. In one word, the vacation was “fabulous”, one of the best vacations we ever had.
Start with lodging – they are very nice, particularly Tortillis Camp. We did not have any problem staying in camps.
Food at Tortillis camp was superb. The chef there especially took extra care to make sure my wife gets vegan meal and I get nice vegetarian meal.

Game drives were all excellent and exciting. The drivers in both the camps are very knowledgeable and made all the best efforts to make sure we see as many animals as possible.

In regards to accommodation, I cannot fault Tortilis. It was absolutely fantastic and I highly recommend this camp. Management, staff, accommodation, activities, organisation, food were all absolutely wonderful. Every guest that I talked to while there shared the same opinion and if anything really stood out amongst all the many great things was the food. The food at this camp was super.

Your choices for accommodation were all exceptional and different as promised. The standout accommodation I thought was at Serena Lake Elementiata (very high quality) but the overall service, food, and guiding etc was best in my opinion at Tortilis. We appear to have been extremely lucky talking to other tourists. On our first day in the Crater we saw two separate lion after kills, a significant number of different animals including a serval cat which got the guide quite excited.

Wonderful people in the camps, the camps showed the different parts of the area and terrain. I was a little nervous going by myself but everyone was watching out for me. The managers at the camps were lovely to me and made sure I had everything I needed. Food was outstanding!!!!

I’ll start at the beginning of our safari adventure. Tortilis camp was wonderful. Manuela and Andrea are wonderful hosts and we had a superb guide, Joel Cheruyiat. The accommodations there were great and so was the food. Everything there is so convenient because it is a small camp. All the staff there were gracious and welcoming. All the Kenyans we met were so friendly.

Whilst we were always going to visit the Mara, your recommendation to also add (and not drop) the initial 2 day stay at Tortillis camp in Amboselli was well worthwhile. The camp itself was excellent (good accommodation and food and friendly staff), the safari experience particularly close up with the elephants was quite magical and unique. We would thoroughly recommend Tortillis as a valuable add on to a Mara visit.

The Tortillis Camp was beautiful, and we liked it’s food the best out of the three camps. The Family suite we were given was beautiful and had lovely terraces to take the afternoon siesta. The guide, Joel, was also the best we had. He was very knowledgeable, kept giving us interesting facts that had us and the kids marveled, he was funny, daring and sociable. We had a great time at Amboselli and even the fog allowed us to see Mr Kilimajaro.

The first camp – Tortilis – we stayed at set our trip off the best way. The camp is in an excellent location and our tent overlooked a small lake where animals go drinking. The management, John and Claire, was very nice and attentive to our needs/requests as well as the camp staff. We really enjoyed our guide at Tortillis, Simon, a very knowledgeable and professional guy as well as Jonathan, the masai guide who accompanied us on a walking safari. The food was also quite good.
