Overview of Okahirongo Elephant Lodge, an A&K Sanctuary

Namibia, Kaokoveld

Okahirongo Elephant Lodge, an A&K Sanctuary is set in one of Namibia’s most remote destinations: the Purros Conservancy in the dramatic Kaokoland area, deep in far north Namibia and home to the striking and enigmatic Himba people. The uniquely designed terracotta lodge and cottages are decorated in a rich and sensuous fusion of pastel colours with ethnic touches and locally carved furnishing adding to the ambience.

Take in the spectacular wrap-around views of the river bed, stark desert scenery and distant purple mountains but the highlight of your stay will be venturing out into the wild desert on professionally guided morning and afternoon nature drives in open 4×4 vehicles in search of unique desert animals. Night drives under spectacular starry skies, early morning desert walks and cultural visits to the local Himba village are also memorable experiences. Okahirongo Elephant Lodge works closely with the Desert Lion Project to conserve Namibia’s beautiful and uniquely desert-adapted big cats.

This lodge is situated in what is often called the last truly wild areas in Namibia. Here you can expect to see the desert adapted elephant, the only place in the world to see it. The lodge is in the Purros Conservancy and in a no-risk malaria area. Enjoy a siesta in your own private gazebo with day bed, or laze around the pool. This loge offers a luxury, desert experience.

The highlight of this trip – we liked it so much we decided to stay one extra night . Lots of elephants, beautiful sceneries, one of the best place to visit an Himba village, staff and guides were very nice and good. Food was amazing…
