Overview

Highly recommended for travellers who are pressed for time and want to maximise a limited budget, this overland safari serves up an amazing itinerary at a very competitive rate. Beginning and ending in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, your tour forsakes the usual city hotel for a tented camp in the Nairobi National Park, assuring you of wildlife sightings from the first afternoon.

You then have an opportunity to explore two of the most famous Rift Valley lakes – Naivasha and Nakuru – taking in their fabulous birdlife and range of animals before finishing with Kenya’s showpiece, the Masai Mara. The Mara is most famous for the annual Wildebeest Migration and remains an excellent wildlife destination at any time of year. You have time for morning and afternoon game drives in search of big cats, wild dogs and heavyweight animals such as elephant, rhino and buffalo.

Safe in the hands of a professional driver/guide, this tour uses a mix of tented camps and lodges with cottage accommodation. All rooms have an en suite bathroom and you have a range of comforts and conveniences to look forward to, including Wi-Fi access, a spa with massage therapist and a swimming pool.

Day 1: Nairobi Under Canvas

Nairobi, Kenya
Detailed breakdown

Day 1: Nairobi Under Canvas | 1 Night

Up arrow
Nairobi, Kenya

Your guide meets you at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and drives you to a tented safari camp set in one of Kenya’s most unique destinations: Nairobi National Park. A conservation area with lions, buffalo, and giraffe among the heavyweight species, the park is a short drive from the airport and makes the perfect start to a safari. You sit back on an afternoon game drive, rounded off with cold drinks and a sunset before returning to a lamp-lit camp and a night under canvas, complete with the comfort of your own bathroom and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Days 2-3: Land of the Lakes | 2 Nights

Up arrow
Lake Nakuru, Kenya

After breakfast at Nairobi Tented Camp, you drive to Lake Naivasha, one of Kenya’s more famous soda lakes and home to tens of thousands of flamingos at certain periods of the year. There is time for a fascinating boat safari and a picnic lunch before continuing your journey to Lake Nakuru and Mbweha Camp, where you check in for two nights. Set in a private wildlife conservancy, Mbweha Camp enjoys an exclusive location and is the ideal base for your next game viewing experience – a full-day safari in Nakuru National Park. As well as prolific birdlife, the park is also home to healthy populations of lions and leopards as well as many big game species including buffalo and both black and white rhinos. Back at camp, you have a lovely stone and thatch cottage complete with outdoor bathtub and private veranda with a comfortable daybed.

Days 4-5: The Masai Mara | 2 Nights

Up arrow
Masai Mara, Kenya

Leaving the lakes behind, you travel onto the rolling grasslands of the Masai Mara and your accommodation for the next two nights:  Tipilikwani Mara Camp. A setting on the banks of the Talek River puts this intimate camp in prime position for game viewing, especially during the annual Wildebeest Migration when huge numbers of wildebeest herds arrive to cross the crocodile-infested river. There is time to settle into your riverside tented suite and absorb the sights and sounds of the Mara before a 4-course supper served by candlelight. The next day you enjoy morning and afternoon game drives in the reserve, your guide on the lookout for the lion, leopard, buffalo and elephant as well as other classic animals such as cheetah, wild dog and hyena.

Day 6: Farewell Kenya

After breakfast at Tipilikwani Camp you travel back to Nairobi where your guide will drop you off at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your onward flight arrangements and an end to this tour.
