Overview

Packing some of Kenya’s biggest safari experiences onto a week-long itinerary, this overland tour is well-balanced and highly diverse. After meeting your guide in Nairobi, you begin straight away at Amboseli National Park, staying at Satao Elerai Camp, a tented eco camp set in a private concession bordering the park. Such a location enables your guide to access both destinations: game drives in Amboseli with its elephants and postcard views of Mount Kilimanjaro plus night drives and nature walks in the concession. The net result is a great range of wildlife and experiences.

Two famous Rift Valley lakes make up the next chapter: Lake Naivasha, where there is time for a boat ride, and then onto Lake Nakuru. Your home for the next two nights is Flamingo Hill Tented Camp, where you enjoy a range of game-viewing activities. Game drives also take place in nearby Lake Nakuru National Park, which is home to lions, leopards and buffalo as well as an enormous number of birds, the most famous being huge flocks of flamingos that carpet the lake at certain times of year.

Your safari closes with Kenya’s flagship national reserve: the Masai Mara, scene of the dramatic Wildebeest Migration and a rewarding and exciting safari destination at any time of year. Your accommodation is Tipilikwani Mara Camp, a tented camp lying on the banks of the Talek River and overlooking game-rich Mara plains. You enjoy guided walks, day and night drives and the option of a hot-air balloon safari before returning by road to Nairobi.

Detailed breakdown

Days 1-2: Discover Amboseli | 2 Nights

Up arrow
Amboseli National Park, Kenya

The safari begins at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport where you meet your guide and head straight for Amboseli National Park. For many travellers, it is the iconic views of Africa’s highest mountain – Kilimanjaro – that brings them to Amboseli. Your accommodation takes care of that: sited in a private concession bordering the park, Satao Elerai Camp has panoramic views of Kilimanjaro, rated as some of the best in the region. Keep an eye out for wildlife as you drive to camp as well as Maasai herders and their cattle; run by the local community, the camp lies on tribal land and you have opportunities to gain an insight into Maasai life.

The following day sees you sitting back on morning and afternoon game drives in Amboseli in search of elephants, lions and buffalo before returning to camp and your comfortable suite, complete with a 4-poster bed and en suite bathroom.

Days 3-4: A Lakeside Retreat | 2 Nights

Returning to Nairobi, your route now takes in some of the Rift Valley’s most scenic destinations – its lakes. First stop is Lake Naivasha where you can take in the views while on a boat trip; this is a haven for birdlife with some 400 recorded species as well as a healthy population of hippo.

You then reach the second lake that evening – Lake Nakuru - and check in at Flamingo Hill Tented Camp. Your comfortable room is a welcome sight after a day on the road. Unlike freshwater Naivasha, Nakuru is a soda lake and home at times to enormous numbers of flamingos that turn the lakeshore pink with their brilliant plumage. You enjoy a full-day safari in the Lake Nakuru National Park, home to the heavyweights such as lion and giraffe as well as both black and white rhinos.

Days 5-6: The Mara Plains | 2 Nights

Up arrow
Masai Mara, Kenya

The game viewing continues as you reach your last destination: the Masai Mara National Reserve and your accommodation, an intimate tented camp with a riverside setting. There is time to settle into your suite at Tipilikwani Mara Camp before a 3-course dinner and the anticipation of the next day’s game viewing. The Mara is the scene for the Wildebeest Migration from about mid-year and remains an excellent wildlife-viewing destination at any time of year. You enjoy a morning and afternoon game drive in the Mara, returning to cool off in the camp’s plunge pool or simply to sit in the shade of your suite and watch wildlife at the river below you.

Day 7: The Journey Ends
